The main character already knows about her power and works to master it, as opposed to going from "ordinary" to "extraordinary" making for a different character arc. There's a slow building romance with lots of great tension--no love triangle (or square!). There's no revolution/big betrayals as plot devices--the MC, instead, has to explore her own darkness and desire for revenge. The writing style is also quite different. I'd consider Frostblood a "traditional" fantasy style/arc, whereas Red Queen is more "pop culture" fantasy (superpowers, etc.) meets dystopia style/arc. (Both books are great; just different)(less)

Have you read any mainstream YA fantasy book over the past few years? If so, it is likely you have already experienced this book with different character names.

Frostblood is just so... unremarkable. Everything about it is familiar and predictable, leading to a read that offered up no excitement, no need to keep turning the pages. It often feels as if YA fantasy publishers deliberately go looking for new authors to retell the same old recycled plots. Stick an attractive cover on the front and let

Reading ‘‘Frostblood’’ was a lot like reading ‘‘Storm Siren’’ for me, in terms of experience.

And I’m not only referring to the fact that both struggled to hold my interest. The characters in them have powers similar to Elsa’s from ‘‘Frozen,’’ especially Ruby who very much wants to be the new Elsa.

Indeed, the real problem is that those powers may be impressive – I mean, come on, who associates power with trash? No one – but they’re not entertaining to read about. Maybe on TV, this story would hav

I read this book in one sitting today, my god. it was good!

Elly Blake has taken a world divided by belief and power. She has created strong characters, with strong bonds. AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE DISPLAY OF THE POWERS IN THIS BOOK.

Really really enjoyed this novel and I look forward to reading the follow up...... next year..... omg next year, I might cry if i have to wait long

I think this would have been a really fun story if I were just discovering YA fantasy books. It has all of the elements from other stories I love and is well written, but... there was just nothing new. It was such a typical mix of every possible trope that I had a really hard time connecting with the story or caring much about anything. And I don't mind tropes if they're well done!! (I keep reading this genre for a reason... I like the typical plots). But there just wasn't much here to connect w ...more

So this wasn't a bad read. I think some will really enjoy it. I just wanted SO badly to be invested, and it just kept falling short for me.

Yes, it has cliche's and tropes and feels very typical YA - but honestly those don't bother me if they are done well enough or if there is some kind of emotional connection. Unfortunately I just didn't ever feel 'that into it.'

We start off with Ruby (a fireblood, how fitting) practicing her fire magic which is of course, il

This book was a lot of fun! I was wary at first because the synopsis felt like a lot of other YA novels out there, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are a few YA tropes in this story but the author truly makes it her own, and everything just works. I loved the characters, especially Ruby, our heroine. She was sassy and strong, even when she was weak physically. It was interesting from beginning to end and just a really solid story.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.

This book was amazing! I don't know how good this review will be, because I just loved the book so much. The first in a new series, Frostblood follows our heroine, Ruby, who is a Fireblood in a world of Frostblood’s. Her country is ruled by the wicked Frost King, who has his minions seek out and destroy any Fireblood about. Hiding her powers for years, she unwittingly draws the soldiers to her village, and h

Hmm . . . Not sure about this one. We kind of got dumped into chaos.

Apparently the type of magic (FIRE) our MC has is outlawed by the . . . wait for it . . . FROST King, who sends his soldiers out to capture(?) anyone reported to have the ability, which is stoopid, as evidenced by what happened when said soldiers tried to capture MC: lots o' FIRE, lots o' burning soldiers.

Okay, so maybe I am sure about this one . . . 75% sure . . . Probably gonna pass . . . We'll see . . . Ugh.

Frostblood was nothing special per se, but that doesn't make this a bad book. If you enjoyed Throne of Glass, The Queen of the Tearling, and/or Snow Like Ashes then you will probably really enjoy this book. And you know what star rating I gave all of those books I just listed? Welp, I read through this quickly. Even though it started off a bit slow, it was great that the relationships were allowed to develop slowly and surely. I did like the world building even if it was an info dump told through story-telling around a campfire. The war between the two magical factions reminded me of Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen series, so if you li

I'm quite picky about the fantasy books I read, but this one was sent to me and I got sucked in by that awesome cover.

I liked Ruby. She's sassy and struggling with her power. I really enjoyed being in her head while she figured everything out. Of course I loved Arcus and Brother Thistle too. There were a few secondary characters that I hope we see in future books.

The mythology/backstory didn't seem important when it was shared and I didn't realize I needed that info until it was being talked a

Is it just me or am I really attracted to books with morbid titles? I do seem to be reading more things that have the world “blood” in them. Initially, I wasn’t going to read this. The synopsis, if not entirely similar to other YA books I’ve read, did indicate that it would have the same opposite-powered/blooded conflict that is so popular among young adult authors these days. To be shamelessly honest, I love the idea. It’s fascinating, not to mention extremely cool. However, even interesting th

If you are also a fan of Frozen, you will probably enjoy Frostblood. I was very intrigued by the story of Ruby, a literally hot girl who struggled to harness her dangerous fire powers. Although I enjoyed Frostblood (considering I finished it in a day, and rarely do that anymore), I liked the second half infinitely more than the first. Frostblood is anything but original: it follows most of the fantasy tropes (special snowflake, insta-attraction to the first character that happens to have a penis, secrets and a boat-load of angst to drown even the most resilient emos) but overall, it's enjoyable and a quick read.

However, it wasn't the tropes that bothered me, but the l

I really liked this! It was well written, great world building, likable characters, lots of action, and some swoon worthy scenes. I'll admit it was a bit predictable and I wasn't drawn into the characters stories like I am with other books but I still really liked it. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!

I flew through this book once I actually had the time to sit down and read it. I read most of it within a day. The story is about a fireblood who is being hunted by the frostblood King when shes taken in by monks who teach her to control her powers. I love elemental magic and this book did it well. The beginning starts off with a bang but the second part of the book has a lot more action. I still liked the world building and getting to know the characters in the first part.

Ahhhh! Total slump-buster in the best way. The only reason it's not getting full marks it's because it's not exactly reinventing the fantasy wheel, the pacing is on the quick side (which is also its biggest strength in a way), and a few niggly quibbly bits (including a total lack of diversity). But overall, I LOVED this book.

It's always tricky when you read something that reminds you of another novel (which you absolutely love), and not to compare the two and subsequently become extremely critical of your current read.
