This collection is EXTRAORDINARY. I am 100% going to get my hands on a finished copy so I can dive back into this book whenever I need it (which is probably a lot).
It is perhaps never possible to adequately collect enough perspectives to present all aspects of feminism in its entirety, but this book comes damn close. Here We Are: Feminism for the Real World covers a wide range of intersectional feminist topics, featuring authors of all colours, races and religions, gay and trans authors, authors ...more

I suppose I should start with one of those disclaimers about how I received a free electronic copy of this from NetGalley and Algonquin Young Readers. However, I also preordered two hard copies with my own money (OK, someone else’s money in gift card form) even before that request was approved. But why wait a whole three weeks when I could read it earlier than that? That’s how excited I am for Here We Are: 44 Voices Write, Draw, and Speak About Feminism for the Real World. It turns out that this

Thanks to this book, I know I need to identify myself as an old school or second wave feminist. (Not having been around prior to 1920!) Third or fourth wave feminism strays from what my mother and I saw as essential feminist sociopolitical concerns and includes issues such as sexual identity, sexual orientation, mental illness, etc. For me, these are side issues that dilute the power of the movement, but for younger feminists, this interesctionality is key to their invol ...more

A YA anthology of essays, lists, poems, photos, and illustrations about feminism from a diverse range of well-known voices.
Authors include Courtney Summers and Kody Keplinger?

This was incredible. Here We Are: Feminism for the Real World. teaches people about feminism, while also talking about intersectionality, gender, sexuality and so much more. And besides consisting of a lot of essays by amazing people, it also includes book recommendations, comics and playlists (also, by amazing people). It's diverse, thoughtful and I wish I could get every single person on earth to read this.
A piercing collection of intersectional feminist writing that should be read by both teens & adults. The pieces within show how feminism can challenge us & change us in concrete, meaningful ways. In my post-election despair, this book (and the Wendy Davis & Daniel Jose Older essays in particular) provided me with much comfort & inspiration to move forward. Much love to everyone who made this book happen.
I never wrote a short review, so here's the full post from my blog.
They’re not kidding when they say this is a life-changing book. I have to give Kelly Jensen major props for putting this collection together. I love the scrapbook structure of the book. It’s broken down into sections like Body and Mind, Culture & Pop Culture, and Relationships. Honestly this book couldn’t have come at a better time.I got this book Thursday afternoon and that same day my class was having yet again a discussion about feminism and yet again this one guy kept on saying that it wasn’t needed and that women and men were as equal as they can get. To get a picture of the type of person he is:he’s a trump supporter,anti-abortion and doesn ...more

Books, writing, pop culture and feminism all in one place accessible for teens on up. Things to think about for feminist newbies to Capital "F" Feminists. I really want teenagers to read this!
Takeaways to think about post reading --
Teenage feminist me would have LOVED this book. Older me loved this book.
Where do I fall on bad feminist a'la Roxane Gay, feminist vs Capital "F" Feminist scale?
What are my fandoms and how do I share them with my daughter?
How has my feminism changed from a 9 year ...more

In most anthologies and collections, be them fiction or nonfiction or poetry, I generally notice a thematic shift when sections change, perhaps a chronological or POV shift in fiction, but after a chapter or two the work doesn’t feel any different than the section before it. That’s not the case with HERE WE ARE. By the end, I could recall a phrase or story, examine how the memory of it felt to me, and be able to navigate back to the corresponding section of the book. Yes, Here We Are is brillian

I was really impressed with this collection of essays and other things (comics, lists, and so on) about feminism. It would be a great primer for any HS student interested and wanting to learn more. There is a focus on representing diverse viewpoints that I really appreciated. I will be doing a book talk on this when I get back from the break.
An intersectional feminist love letter to girls stuffed with resources and wonderful voices that can, and should, be read by boys, women, men, and non-binary genders.
As a long time feminist I still found many things to think about, learn, and more importantly I find it always necessary to listen to as many voices as possible to continue learning. An excellent book to read, gift, and keep forever on your shelf. I hope it'll find many homes where girls will have the access they need to Here We Ar ...more

Podría ser interesante.
"Here We Are: Feminism for the Real World" by Kelly Jensen is a book about tons of feminists combining all of their personal thoughts on the world with feminism all in one. The book is in many points of views on different topics that come with feminism. Some of them are men, and some of them are women. There are tons off little skits and drawings between the chapters. Also, each chapter is a different subject.

This one was out of my wheelhouse. It definitely isn’t something that I would typically ask to review. I worked with the author Kelly Jensen on the Cybils Awards, and when I heard that she had a YA Nonfiction title being published, I had to read it.
It is more than just a primer on feminism and includes the first person stories, poems and essays of so many different people. Before reading this, I would not have labeled myself a feminist as I always thought of that term in one way when in fact thi ...more

I hope that plenty of teen girls read this and learn more about feminism. I honestly don't know if this would have been a difference-maker for me when I was in high school and I didn't come into my feminism until college, but I think it was a less common word ten years ago. I learned everything I needed to know in my Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies class, then did a lot of my own reading and directed study afterwards. Since then, it's been a huge part of discourse with celebrities and polit

I was excited to receive an ARC from Algonquin Young Readers. When I first became aware of this book, I knew it was something I wanted to read.
I wish this book had been published when I was in high school! It took me a long time to really take agency of my feminism, and had I been presented with an anthology such as this scrap-book like compilation, I would have found the voices with which I needed to connect to help accept and understand the idea of feminism.
My mother is a 2nd wave feminist, a ...more

I absolutely LOVED this collection. I was a little worried going into it that it would be too juvenile or repetitive for me, as a 22-year-old about to graduate with a minor in Women's Studies. While this book did go over a lot of topics I already felt pretty well-educated about, it tackled them in really interesting and fresh ways. The book is marketed toward teenagers, so there were some parts that ...more

What an impressive and necessary book.
For teen readers who are hearing about feminism (good or bad opinions about it) and want to know more and learn about how different people express feminism, this is a MUST. For teen readers who identify as feminist and want to get different perspectives on it, this is a MUST. For teen readers who have never once thought about feminism in their lives, this is a MUST.

Here We Are is an amazing collection of essays, letters, poems, playlists, comics, and historical information. It is an anthology that focuses on intersectional feminism and shows why it is important. Here We Are covers topics such as body image, eating disorders, sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia, religion, male and white privilege, and problems with our patriarchal society just to name a few. This is an extraordinary book that everyone should read, whether they are familiar with femin
