  1. Huge jump in Hudson Bay sea ice cover this week as temperature dropped. Much of the ice likely too thin for but it will thicken.

  2. Hudson Bay tracked slowly moving offshore: clumped in west. Late freeze impact evident next year: low cub survival likely.

  3. Lowest ice cover since 1967 for December 20 at Svalbard If area become ice-free year round, it ceases to be habitat.

  4. Hudson Bay hasn't hit 50% ice cover & "normal" (includes loss to 2010) would be ca. 90%. in James Bay still stranded on land.

  5. 2nd lowest sea ice in Svalbard Problem for pregnant that went north in summer. They can't just go "somewhere else".

  6. Bears think with their stomachs. That’s a real problem when you get hungry bears around people.

  7. Late 2016 freeze-up has most tracked Hudson Bay still near shore (2 far off where they prefer) vs 2014. Great maps by

  8. Great overview of the challenges of living on a migration route & the perils facing the bears.

  9. New paper from our lab on population structure in Hudson Bay using SNPs and microsatellites.

  10. Great to see Nunavut developing greater awareness of human- conflicts. A growing concern in many areas for both people & bears.

  11. killed in Tuktoyaktuk: rare event in town. More hungry bears near people a growing concern across Arctic.

  12. Hudson Bay is freezing up but there's still a lot of missing ice (red areas) that make tough conditions for in southern areas.

  13. being tracked by eartag radios moving offshore now. These were human-conflict bears in Churchill now free to do their own thing.

  14. 2016 was the record for human- conflict issues in Churchill, Manitoba. Longer ice-free period ==> increased conflict.

  15. Svalbard is still largely ice-free & likely presenting major challenges to and their prey that rely on ice as habitat.

  16. Sea ice is finally forming in Hudson Bay: with -28 C / -19 F today, the ice is forming fast & the are moving quickly offshore.

  18. Anyone see a difference? Here's where our satellite tracked female were in December 8, 2014 and today.

  19. Hudson Bay ice still too thin for most . 2 tracked bears that were 70+ km offshore just came back to land (includes mom & cubs).

  20. My blog for on the situation for in Hudson Bay this autumn. Tough times indeed.
