Patriots outlast Jets for 24-17 win
There are likely to be some sore feelings around the Jets about how things played out leading up to that result. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins was initially ruled to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter that would have cut the Patriots’ lead to three points, but a replay review led to officials ruling it a touchback that gave the Patriots the ball on their 20-yard line.
Replays shown on #FOX appeared short of the conclusive video evi...dence needed to overturn a call, but the Jets were left without points. They’d kick a field goal in between quick three and outs to give themselves a chance after the two minute warning and moved the ball into Patriots territory before a Kyle Van Noy sack amid a flurry of incompletions left the Jets out of time.
The Patriots’ 24-17 win is their 11th straight on the road and leaves them alone at the top of the #AFC East with a 4-2 record. Their offense had a very slow start, but found their footing on a 93-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter and kept things going with 10 points in the third quarter. Dion Lewis, James White and Mike Gillislee ran 24 times for 117 yards while Tom Brady was 20-of-38 for 257 yards and a touchdown.
Tight end Rob #Gronkowski had six catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns while also drawing a pass interference flag that set up the third Patriots touchdown of the day. Jets rookie safety Jamal Adams had a rough time, even if that flag was an iffy one, in what should be the first of many meetings with the Patriots.
New England’s defense forced a pair of turnovers to go with the one they got on the Seferian-Jenkins play, but those worried about the state of the secondary likely found things to worry about as Josh McCown threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort. McCown hit eight different receivers and has developed a good rapport with Seferian-Jenkins, Jermaine Kearse and Jeremy Kerley over the first six weeks of the season.
That wasn’t enough for a win this Sunday, but it’s made for a better #Jets season than expected and there wasn’t much about Sunday’s performance to suggest the good results are about to stop.

President #Trump said Wednesday it’s “about time” after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a letter to teams calling on players to "honor our flag" and stand for the national anthem.
The president’s comments come a day after Goodell sent a memo to NFL executives and club presidents, aiming to move past the weeks-long feud between the White House and NFL players who have kneeled or otherwise protested during the national #anthem at the start of NFL games.
“We live in a coun...try that can feel very divided. Sports, and especially the #NFL, brings people together and lets them set aside those divisions, at least for a few hours,” Goodell wrote. “The current dispute over the National Anthem is threatening to erode the unifying power of our game, and is now dividing us, and our players, from many fans across the country.”

Patriots hold on for 19-14 victory over Buccaneers as last second throw falls incomplete.
Patriots held the Buccaneers to just 14 points but had to sweat out a final throw to the end zone to escape with a 19-14 victory in Tampa Bay.
Jameis Winston’s last second pass for O.J. Howard was off-target and incomplete to enable the Patriots to hold on. Winston and the Buccaneers had moved the ball 56 yards over the final minute of play to set up one last-ditch chance to steal the v...ictory. Instead, the Patriots won another close game with little margin to spare.
Nick Folk missing three field goals didn’t exactly help the Buccaneers chances either.
While the Patriots’ porous defense still allowed 409 yards, they did just enough to keep the Buccaneers from putting too many points on the board.
Brady posted yet another 300-yard passing game, throwing for 303 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Winston passed for 334 yards with a touchdown for the Buccaneers.

Stephon Gilmore, Patriots' secondary fizzle out in loss to Panthers
The secondary was supposed to be the strength of the New England Patriots’ defense, but one-quarter into the 2017 season, it has been anything but.
The secondary and its communication breakdowns are a growing concern, as evidenced by Sunday's 33-30 loss to the #Carolina Panthers. Until it is fixed, assuming it can be, the team’s Super Bowl championship hopes will be shaky.

Brady, Patriots pull off last second win over Watson, Houston Texans

Brady wasted no time in picking apart a discombobulated New Orleans back seven, throwing three touchdowns in the first quarter alone—the first time he’s done that in his entire 273-game career. He accomplished this despite the fact that New England suited just three receivers (they’re dealing with injuries to Danny Amendola and Matt Slater), as he spread the ball around to the Patriots’ versatile offensive skill players. On New England’s first possession, Brady found Rex Burkhead in the back of the end zone after the free-agent running back acquisition lined up in the slot and ran a route up the seam. On the Patriots’ second possession, Brady eluded pressure in the pocket and heaved it up to Rob Gronkowski, and the big tight end did the rest to put the ball in the end zone. On the team’s third possession, Brady hit receiver Chris Hogan with a back-shoulder fade for the score.
After looking a little skittish—and worryingly inaccurate—in the team’s opening game, the devastatingly accurate and poised Brady we’ve come to know showed up in New Orleans. As Brady calmly moved around in the pocket and connected with his receivers downfield, New England’s offense collected another touchdown and three field goals over the next three quarters to bury the Saints while punting only twice all afternoon.

Tom Brady has set a new personal record. The 40-year-old #quarterback scored three touchdowns in the first quarter against the New Orleans Saints. That’s the highest total of touchdown passes he’s thrown for in a first quarter in any game.
Brady finished the first quarter throwing 11 of 15 for 177 yards and three touchdowns. His Patriots took a 20-3 lead over the Saints.

So far the Patriots haven’t heard an offer they’re interested in, but they have a crowded running back depth chart that saw Mike Gillislee, James White and Rex Burkhead all get more carries than Lewis on Thursday. Even receiver Chris Hogan got more carries than Lewis. If they don’t have much use for Lewis in their offense, perhaps the Patriots would be willing to move him.
The 26-year-old Lewis is in the last year of his contract and is making a $1.2 million base salary this season. He could be a cheap addition for some team looking for another running back.
