In April 2017, Segura published an investigation detailing allegations that a Chicago police detective framed at least 51 people from a predominantly Latino community for murder. Barely a week after her story ran, the main defendant she profiled in that story was suddenly released from prison, where he had spent 23 years behind bars on a life sentence.

Segura joined BuzzFeed News in 2015 as the inaugural Columbia University/BuzzFeed News Diversity Fellow. She's particularly interested in reporting on the intersection of justice, class, and race.
