Andy Lomas is a digital artist, mathematician, and Emmy award winning supervisor of computer generated effects. Taking inspiraction from the work of Alan Turing, Ernst Haeckel and D'Arcy Thompson, his Morhogenetic Creations explore how intricate structures and forms can be created emergently by digital simulation of growth. The works take inspiration from biological processes rather than emulating them directly, exploring generic similarities between many different shapes that could be created in nature rather than reproducing any particular organism. Through a process of selection using aesthetic criteria increasingly intricate forms can be created, often with deep resemblances to many biological entities. Typical final structures consist of up to a hundred million individual parts, yielding levels of detail that would be difficult or impossible to obtain using conventional techniques.
He has had work exhibited in over 50 joint and solo exhibitions, including SIGGRAPH, the Japan Media Arts Festival, the Ars Electronica Festival, the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo and the ZKM. He has work in the D'Arcy Thompson Art Fund Collection, and was selected by Saatchi Online to contribute to a special exhibition in the Zoo Art Fair at the Royal Academy of Arts.
