    Also, I'm loving that Lal actually *critiques* the historical sources about Nur Jahan, which is refreshing and lovely. Even today, a number of english-language mughal resources don't question the bias and purpose of missionary/western accounts, or mughal court biographies.

    Lal points out what a bloody interesting figure Nur Jahan is. 20th wife of Emperor Jahangir, Nur Jahan was not royal-blooded or the mother of princes - factors usually connected to women's power. Instead she was a middle-aged, educated, political widow.
