    Everything about the US healthcare system is crazy and inexplicable but the thing where you can go to an in-network hospital but one of the doctors is not in-network and it financially ruins you is quadruple bananas and should be illegal.

    I learned that patients can be billed for just sitting in a waiting room sometimes upwards of $5,000. I learned that even at in-network hospitals, patients can face high bills from out-of-network doctors. (7/11)

    Since prices aren’t public, its impossible for patients to know if they’re at the hospital that charges $1 for a generic ointment — or the one that charges 76 times more. (6/11)

    The costs are high — and they vary hugely from hospital to hospital. Case in point: I found one hospital charging $1 for a squirt of an antibiotic ointment called bacitracin — and another charging $76. (5/11)

    Emergency room prices are HIGH. Even for things you could buy at the pharmacy. I read at least five bills where a pregnancy test costs more than $100. That’s 20x the cost of a very nice pregnancy test on Amazon! (4/11)

    Most people are really happy with the care they received. The marijuana patient, the kid who ate a quarter were both treated quickly and well. But a lot of them are overwhelmed and unprepared for the bill they receive. (3/11)

    People go to the ER for so many reasons. They go because —they were in a car accident —they think they have appendicitis —their kid ate a quarter —they ate a big bag of chocolate, only to realize it was edible marijuana These things all happened in the bills I read. (2/11)

    I want to cry happy tears when I think about the impact that's come out of 's ER bills database this past year — and the fact that community is at the core of it all.

    As a result of our ER Billing Project, we’ve had more than $45,000 in medical bills reversed — and inspired a bill in the Senate to fix the problems I write about.
