I've been personally involved in cyber-extortion situations more than once. Believe me, it sucks. It tests your ethics, morals, and resolve.

Fair to assume those who say things like, “You should NEVER pay the ransom” have themselves never been personally in an extortion situation?

When reading ‘paper’ books and magazines, in my mind I’m constantly thinking ⌘-F.

I’ve been contemplating how much of the world’s data, even the most valuable, that’s stored on disk is backed up. I’d wager less than 10%.
