Which is exactly the point I was trying to raise. Nate is articulating *precisely* the position the reactionaries in Charlottesville held 15 months ago.

The boycott of companies that did business with apartheid South Africa was essential in that regime's demise. In the late 1940s/early 1950s, the knew that what kept that racist government afloat was millions in $. The NAACP worked with the ANC to shut that flow down.

Final point bc I have to run: one of the things that has struck me about the common impulse binding various bigotries is the association with uncleanliness. “Dirty [insert epithet here]” Nothing ever comes of this association but eventual violence directed at the targeted group.

Parameters actually matter. People weren’t going after Carlson’s advertisers this hard when he voiced other typically right wing/potentially offensive ideas. But “dirty” was reasonably seen as a bridge too far.

The net effect of what you’re arguing is a kind of useless equivalency. Advertisers associating with my views about race in the New Yorker or your views about statistical probabilities in an election is *not* in the same boat as one financing the idea that immigrants are dirty.

But a corporation is never not political esp given that our bizarre legal system awards them the status of personhood. They donate to political candidates. They lobby. Moreover in this case they were advertising *on a show about politics*.

But are you opposed to corporate responsibility? In this instance you’re asking the corporation why they’re literally paying someone who calls immigrants “dirty.”

In my book about the history of boycotting, I show that abolitionists and white Southern nationalists employed the tactic in the 19th c. There is nothing inherently "progressive" or conservative about boycotting. But it is an American political tradition.

Years ago Fryer was quoted in the NYT saying his work was concerned with figuring out “where black people went wrong.” I have some suggestions.

But Nate, this is akin to saying black people in Montgomery should not have boycotted busses because white people were already boycotting black schools. The fact that a tactic can be used for just or unjust purposes doesn’t mean you should never engage it.

Ah. Our version of this is “the magical Negro.” Benign, mystical creature whose main trait, a superhuman talent for forbearance, exists to make white people feel good about themselves.
