    could large annual conferences just be a string of pre-conferences? Everyone always likes those the best. They're curated by the experts. I'm sure there's something wrong with this plan, i'm just not seeing it yet.

    Re: writing tenure evaluations. I'll never forget a handwritten thank you note I got from a dept chair, saying what was helpful about my letter. I'm always conscientious about evals, but that gave me a boost for the next batch. Snail mail--keeps it classy, makes people feel good.
