David Sheldrick was saving elephants long before the DSWT was founded in his memory. Orphan Sobo was rescued in 1971, a few years later she rejoined the wild herds in Tsavo.

The orphans in our care are quick to study the art of milk theft, observing and picking up tips (not to mention naughty habits!) from older friends. Suffice it to say, no one is crying over spilt milk at the DSWT Nursery!

Chaimu has returned back to the wild but she still comes back to her old home (our Ithumba Reintegration Unit) for an occasional sleepover. As well as catching up with the people that saved her & the orphans still in our care, it’s a chance to eat their lucerne leftovers!

Alone no more! Cruel circumstances may have robbed these of their mothers but, at the DSWT, they find comfort, love and support in our orphan family. Help us care for these survivors by fostering an orphan:

Having discovered a new area of forest, Malkia was so engrossed in eating tasty leaves she missed the 9am bottle feed. Once she realised she’d been left behind, she ran as fast as her legs could carry her, trumpeting loudly, desperate not to miss out & fill her tummy even more!

Last month the DSWT/KWS Mara Vet Unit successfully treated this speared in the head. Miraculously, there was no major damage to his sight & he lived to tell the tale!
