Reviewing *another* paper that concludes two correlations are different just because only one of them is statistically significant. As always, I’m pointing them to this easy-to-use online tool, which is an implementation of the ‘cocor’ package

Just seen a Gantt chart with every activity occurring all the time. This is the amount of respect that Gantt charts deserve, and I applaud it.

So let me get this clear: If we give fewer firsts, it's 'falling standards', and if we give *more* firsts, it's 'falling standards' (and if we give the same number, it's 'stagnation') Just stop it. Stop inventing meanings for numbers in order to bash universities. It's pathetic.

THREAD. There are only 10 students currently studying their degrees part-time at Cambridge University. All are disabled, and had to go through a gruelling process to be permitted to do this. Yesterday found that 3 are still paying £9000 per YEAR.

Fantastically on-point illustrations of casual sexism in science, that is well-intended but nonetheless so very tiresome. Experienced most of these first hand! Thanks

I am in Istanbul with and others to observe the legal trials of colleagues who signed a petition calling for peace. The 2 PhD students on trial today were humbling and inspiring. Please read/share/publicise and show solidarity with our colleagues however you can.

Summary: Go for it; be prepared to fight a bit to maintain your 0.7 workload (also, join your union!); 'good enough' teaching is good enough; and if you feel hopelessly out of your depth for the first 6 months, I did too.

Fifth: Did I mention it was hard? It was, but I think I struggled with the transition from postdoc to lecturer much less than a lot of people, because I had already learned a lot of the skills I needed.

Fourth: I had a line manager who recognised that 'just give it to the teaching assistants' was not an acceptable strategy for all the new tasks that 'proper staff' didn't want to do. That was helpful. (I was still doing more than I should have done on 0.5 FTE though)

Third: The topic of my PhD was not dictated by funding - I brought the research question myself. The freedom was great, but my topic was 'odd' for my department. I'm glad I stuck to my question, but it was a bit isolating to have so little in common with other people there.

Second, money stuff: You're employee not student. You have council tax and income tax and NI to think about (boo), but you're in the pension scheme already (yay? hmm..) In my first two years I had less income than those on stipends, but later I had more (bc pay increments)
