Making British Characters Realistic as an American Writer…and Vice Versa

Yes. I recently wrote a superhero short story set in 1950s Arizona, and I normally write in a very heightened British English for my steampunk.
It was critically important to sound right since this was for an anthology. I was happy enough with the voices of most of the characters but word usage was always an issue. And I will never be able to force myself to use "gotten" or present participle for past particle :-) I just hate it.
But I have American editors, so with a clear understanding of what I was aiming for, the various states the characters came from and carte blanche to fix my English they went at it.
In fact, not much was changed (I was narrating it in my head in US English as I wrote), although they did insert a "gotten". Probably just to spite me :-)
