The original 9 hole course was built by Mackenzie Ross in 1936 and was skilfully integrated into the new 18 Holes by designers Cameron and Powell in 2010. This has created some delightfully contrasting holes. It begins on the original layout through avenues of trees and opens out with the primary hazards being bunkers and series of small burns which criss cross the fairways, while the subtle burrows and slopes on the high quality greens will test all. The final holes narrow again when they return to the original holes and climb up the hillside. One of the most eye catching features of the course are the huge tee boxes which are bordered by the stone from the surrounding region. Rio Real Golf Course is a classic test of golf and is one of the oldest on the Costa del Sol, it is a fine parkland layout with all holes tree lined and has lots of natural beauty, with a combination of pines, palms, casuarinas, olives and cypress trees. The course has some subtle hills especially on the back nine – the 10th is one of the stand out holes a big dog leg uphill to the right – leaving a blind approach to the green. Manicured always to the best quality, an absolute joy to play with slick greens and well positioned bunkers.
