Stars and El Cap

The stars shine in the dark #TexasNightSky over El Capitan in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. I had to get in one more trip to take some images and drove to Guadalupe mountains on Christmas Day. I caught some nice sunsets, ice fog, and one clear morning. The Milky Way had just set and I was able to get this shot of the stars over the prow of El Capitan.

El Capitan in Ice Fog

I spent a few days this last week in Guadalupe Mountains NP and woke up one morning to Ice Fog. In the 20 F (-7) + 30mph winds the fog was freezing on everything it touched. My tent was frozen, the trees has a coating of ice, and the fog was spilling over the ridge around El Capitan. I captured this image of a frosted over yucca and grasses with El Cap slicing through the fog. This was one of the few spots I could even see the mountains as most of my locations I go to the fog was too thick.

A magical winter morning. It was also a good time to reflect on 2017, think about the new year and what travels I hope to have.

Happy New Year to all!!

El Cap in the Clouds

A view of El Capitan, the dramatic end of the Guadalupe Mountains peeking out from the clouds. One of the weather features of the Guadalupes is how they can trap clouds on their eastern side while the western side will often remain clear. On this day that was happening and clouds would spill over the ridge and then dissipate in the clearer and drier sky. I caught El Cap in a gap in the clouds.

El Cap in the Stars

The Milky Way shines over El Capitan, the dramatic end of the Guadalupe Mountains. Like the prow of a ship slicing through the desert, the peaks of the Guadalupes are a "sky island". They are a cooler, wetter, greener place than the surrounding desert.

Here I am looking up at the Milky Way and the night sky above.
