At $250m, #RedHat paid a lofty premium for a company whose revenue was negligible. Beyond some revenue, what Red Hat really got was a team whose open source mindset is a near-perfect pattern match for Red Hat, not to mention a company that has been doing some of the more interesting tooling around #Kubernetes. All of which is worth much more than $250m for Red Hat.

Red Hat currently generates more than $2bn annually in revenues, but the key to its future is to add a few billion through things like Ansible (automation) and, in particular, Kubernetes (read: OpenShift). Red Hat executives have regularly touted the benefits of OpenShift to its business, leading to larger deals that pull along other products (like Red Hat Enterprise Linux).

#DellTechnologies is exploring an IPO or another kind of financial maneuver involving data center software company #VMware. The disclosure confirms media reports last week that said Dell was considering going public after operating for roughly five years as a private company.

Dell did not say why it is exploring a major deal, but previous media reports have speculated that it is seeking financing to help pay off the $46bn in debt that it took on as part of its #EMC acquisition. The company said in the regulatory filing that it has repaid around $10bn in debt since closing the EMC acquisition.

U.S. computer maker #DellTechnologies Inc and business software provider #VMware Inc have decided to explore options that could include a potential merger of the two companies. The move, which may not result in any deal, comes as Dell, the world’s largest privately held technology company, seeks new avenues for growth following its debt-laden acquisition of data storage provider #EMC Corp for $67bn in 2016.

VMware plans to announce that it will form a special committee of board directors to consider a combination with #Dell. VMware is 80%-owned by Dell, so the special committee is aimed at making any combination subject to approval by disinterested directors who will safeguard the interests of VMware minority shareholders.
