Spiti, Himachal, India
A river and a ledge or hillside safe from avalanches and rock slides and you're set to build a house or a hamlet as seen in the distance here.
This river is mellow now, but will become a raging torrent in flash floods that will change the landscape. I came across destroyed bridges with steel girders bent like they were made of rubber and enormous boulders that have come down the mountain sides or been pushed downriver by the cataclysmic forces of a flash flood.
With in-depth knowledge from generations of experiencing normal and extreme conditions, people know where it is safe to build a home.
It might not be the most convenient of locations - but it is a choice of safe or sorry!
Now in January the temperatures are plummeting as the sky is clear but the sun is barely reaching above the mountains - without any strength to thaw. The river seen flowing here is frozen, and all water must be carried as ice blocks up the hills to the houses - everything takes longer now.

Life on a ledge

Follow a river and you are bound to find a house or a hamlet. In remote and arid Spiti of western Himalaya a side valley might seem like a gateway to a land where no one can live, yet time and time again you’ll be surprised to find a building high up on a ledge.
What appears to be a desolate mountain with steep and impassable slopes could be home to an individual, a family or several families. These white buildings serve as a point of reference and truly make you understand the scale of things and the challenges life here is.
In winter the white houses are not as easy to see against the white snow, and the trails and roads are barely discernable. Only a local will find the way in a white-out land.
Recent winters have been very hard to humans and wildlife alike as the amount of snow has been very much more than normal, and resulted in the deaths of many, many wild sheep and goats.
I can only imagine how hard it must be to walk up and down the trails to this hamlet in snow and ice. It looks so beautiful and pittoresque in an autumn-clad landscape, but with snow and avalanches coming down many of these mountain slopes, the winters are hard and cold, but the people of the Himalayas and Spiti are prepared as they have lived here for generations.

The resplendent #Spiti will leave you spoiled - Untraveled Routes
A sub-division of #Lahaul & #Spiti District, #HimachalPradesh state, with #Tibet as its next door neighbor and ethno-religious cousins, Spiti is strategically located in the #trans-Himalayan niche. The country is surrounded by enormous #mountain ranges and traversed by th main line of the #Himalayas. The drainage of the northern waste of the river #Tsarab runs into the Indus while that of the main Spiti valley joins the #Sutlej.
The average elevation of the mountain ranges is over 18,000ft and they lie somewhat higher than Lahaul. The valleys are some two thousand feet higher than the Chandra and #Bhaga valleys of Lahaul. Tsarub has a minimum elevation of 14,000ft and the lowest parts of Spiti valley are considerably more than 11,000ft above the sea.

There are 5 main Monasteries in #Spiti (Tabo, Dhankhar, Kungri, Tangyut, and Kye) and some #unique Buddhist temples. The spiritual aspiration of the local community often leads the way to a #monastic life, which is represented through these ancient monasteries dating back to over a 1000 years.
#Chortens & #mane walls are present everywhere and the enchanting intonations of 'Om Mane Padme Hum' resonate throughout the #SpitiValley.
The major #Vajrayana Buddhist sects in Spiti are #Sakyapa, #Nyingmapa and #Gelugpa. Each of these sects have specific regions in which they thrive and their #unique and distinct practices add diversity to the charm of the #cultural life of the region.
Various unique aspects of #traditional Tibetan Buddhist #culture are well-preserved and have flourished in the Spiti Valley. Local #festivals provide the ideal platform for cultural exchange among this diverse #Buddhist #community.

#Spiti is home to a purely homogenous #Buddhist society belonging to the #Mahayana (Vajrayana) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Before the advent of #Buddhism in Spiti, there was a popular animistic creed called #Bon. In the 9th century AD #Padmasambhava brought Buddhism to this valley and the people embraced this non-violent and compassionate #religion.
In 11th century AD, #RinchenTsangpo was born in the #Purang area of Tibet and he became a pioneer in establishing the foundations for the Buddhist religion in Western Tibet. He is credited with the establishment of various #monasteries in Spiti (#Tabo, #Kye, and #Sarkhang), #Ladakh, #Gogay, #Purang, #Tholing, etc.
