CONTROLLING the HORSES
Seeing the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, especially the part when they left in the carriage surrounded by riders, I became aware of the problems drivers and riders might encounter when they have to pass through a noisy crowd.
The couple's drive in the wedding carriage could have been a real disaster... and all that just because the person in charge to assess the event, select the proper horses and equipment, train the horses and the riders, didn't do a good job.
How do you properly prepare for a similar event?
1. Assess the real situation - how is the weather (is there a windy, full of energy weather,...?), how crowded and noisy is the path the horses have to follow... test the horses and riders in a similar situation /if possible on the same day.
2. The horses - at the carriage, always put the calmest and most dependable horses as the leading pair in front of the carriage. The same detail applies for the escort riding horses : you have to put the calmest horses in the front.
3. The equipment - it should be chosen according to the tradition and the event but it should be always adapted to the real needs, in order to ensure the security of the people, in order to prevent every possible misfortune to happen.
Remember - in the classical way of using the horses for riding and driving (carriages), the position of horse's head is crucial for maintaining a proper control and in such cases additional well chosen martingale is most welcome.
4. The training - it should be as dedicated to that event as possible and it should contain as many rehearsals as necessary... with at least one rehearsal on that particular path, early in the morning or right before the big event...
So what is to be learned from this event?
Each event has to be understood as unique and we should prepare for it in a dedicated way. The horse is a reactive animal, which always responds according to the situation. It is very hard to have it perfectly under control at any time...
To prepare for such an event you have to be able to assess the situation, select the right horses for each position and know how to bring them and keep them under perfect control by using the right equipment and training program.
