#Pope Francis has used his Christmas message to call for a negotiated two-state solution to end the #Israeli-#Palestinian conflict, after US President Donald Trump stoked regional tensions with his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The Pope spoke of the Middle East conflict and other world flashpoints in his "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) address, delivered from the balcony of St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican to tens of thousands of people.
"Let us pray that the will to resume dialogue may prevail between the parties and that a negotiated solution can finally be reached, one that would allow the peaceful coexistence of two states within mutually agreed and internationally recognised borders," he said, referring to the Israelis and Palestinians.
"We see Jesus in the children of the Middle East who continue to suffer because of growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians."
The address came four days after more than 120 countries backed a UN resolution urging the United States to reverse its decision on Jerusalem.
It was the second time that the Pope has spoken out publicly about Jerusalem since Mr Trump's decision on December 6.
On that day, Pope Francis called for the city's "status quo" to be respected, lest new tensions in the Middle East further inflame world conflicts.

He asked for "the gift of peace for the whole world." According to the Pope, he especially prays for those who suffer from wars.

Pope Francis has addressed thousands of worshippers at the Vatican, gathered to listen to his fifth "Urbi et Orbi" (To the City and The World), the traditional #Christmas message.
"We see Jesus in the children of the Middle East who continue to suffer because of growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians," Pope Francis stated, praying for the peaceful coexistence of the two states.

#Pope Francis's appeal was voiced in the wake of the recent tensions over the December 6 US move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which triggered condemnation of Muslim states and prompted mass outrage across the Arab world, with #Hamas, the #Palestinian Islamic fundamentalist organization, announcing the beginning of the third "intifada."
Responding to the issue, the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution, rejecting Trump's decision the December 21, lambasted by Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu, claiming that #Jerusalem "always was, always will be" the country's capital and noting that many countries supported the Jewish state.
