Apart from being a practically impossible device to build, it also seems like an incredibly pointless and somewhat outdated weapon. A person wielding a light saber against a real enemy with modern weaponry would be cut to ribbons in a second by anyone with an automatic weapon, or a low yield nuclear weapon. In fact, about the only person a light saber warrior could beat, in reality, would be someone coming at them with a knife.
As cool as they look in fantasy films, I think building one would be nothing more than an expensive, dangerous novelty with little to no practical use.
The technology needed to achieve it could undoubtedly be used in many other manufacturing applications, but as a sword it's just goofy.
