Don’t underestimate our determination to fight this #tradewar: That was the message from #PeterAltmaier, #Germany’s economics minister, at this week’s meeting of his party’s economics committee in Berlin. The minister, who is known as both a close ally of Chancellor #AngelaMerkel and an experienced diplomat and dealmaker, was talking about new #US tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Up to now Mr. Altmaier has taken a conciliatory tone, saying he understands why the US is worried about their steel mills and suggesting #Europe reduce their tolls on US-made cars, in the hope that the US would return the favor. However, with the steel and aluminum tariffs now in effect, US president Donald #Trump is threatening even more #protectionist measures, this time in the form of 25% import tariffs on German cars. French president #EmmanuelMacron has been particularly staunch about talking tough with the Trump administration. So now that all else appears to have failed, the new German attitude brings the Merkel government closer to #France.

President Donald #Trump has followed up a fractious weekend summit with major US allies by repeatedly accusing them of unfair treatment over trade. Trump told French President #EmmanuelMacron during a recent meeting in Washington that there are too many German cars in the #UnitedStates. He's also raised the issue with German Chancellor #AngelaMerkel in the past, and threatened to tax German car imports at 35%.

Economists say Trump is missing two key points: German automakers have opened big factories in the United States, dramatically reducing their need to import cars. Plus, targeting German carmakers would hurt American workers and the US economy. German automakers sold 1.35 million vehicles in the United States in 2017, about 8% of total US car sales. Of those, only 494,000 were exported from #Germany to the US.
