I never made broad statements about the healthcare system except to say I believe it is broken. YOU are the one in this conversation making such statements. I told an anecdote.

You told me I was wrong about my own personal experience. Basically saying this upsetting thing that happen to me didn’t matter because you have experienced otherwise.

Then you continued to tell me how my personal experience was incorrect.

Invalidation sends the message that a person’s subjective emotional experience is inaccurate, insignificant, and/or unacceptable. There is a reason it is considered a form of emotional abuse in relationships. Dismissing one person’s lived experience as not invalid because you have had years of a different experience in a completely different place is such an off-putting thing to do. There is literally no need to do so to someone telling an anecdote, except to satisfy a need to center the conversation on you and your experience.

I encourage you to stop using strictly your lens of personal experience to approach the world. Telling someone that your experience invalidates their own is incredibly arrogant, dismissive, lacking in empathy, and frankly just dick-ish. Your experience as one person in the world does not equate authority or expert knowledge. Continually focusing a topic on oneself doesn’t win many friends in the real world.

Ok. Obviously your experience must cancel out mine.

You are incorrect. Emts and paramedics would both have been able to give me over the counter pain meds, so I would have gotten some kind of care. They also literally told me I would have been taken straight to the back if I had come in, in an ambulance. I didn’t even see the triage nurse until I been there almost two hours. You do know things can vary from place to place, and patient volume can be different from hospital to hospital, and one person’s experience is anecdotal, and not gospel?

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Alternatively, I once had deep second degree burns and was worried about the cost of an ambulance so my roommate took me to the ER. I waited over *six hours to be seen, despite suffering what is thought to be some of the worst pain a human can experience. I passed out once on the way there and once in the waiting room. The intake nurse told my roommate, “better keep her seated.”

They told me later I would have been triaged hours earlier if I had taken an ambulance, and to this day I don’t understand how it is not based on the severity of one’s situation. If only I had known; I would taken a bottle of ibuprofen with me at least, instead of receiving zero care at all for hours and hours.

Such absolute bullshit from every direction. The healthcare system in the US is beyond broken.

Inmates are the only population in the United States with a constitutional right to health care by SoManyQuestions- in antiwork

Respectfully, I don’t think you understand that this is sometimes how our rights are established. The Supreme Court has the final say over when a right is protected by the Constitution or when a Constitutional right is violated and these rulings make such things literally the same as the Constitution itself. These rulings equate to an amendment.

Nope, halfway to 90, and I have found the more I care about others, the happier my own life is.

I highly recommend to you Brene Brown’s writings. Her TED Talk “The Power of Vulnerability” is one of the most ever viewed. In sharing her research on shame, vulnerability, worthiness and courage, she has made the world a better, kinder place. One statement that stuck with me from one of her later books is that “All I know is that my life is better when I assume that people are doing their best. It keeps me out of judgment and lets me focus on what is, and not what should or could be.” That allows for better problem-solving and solution-based approaches. I also find myself infinitely happier when I adopt such principles.

Sure, folded into taxes, people still will pay. But almost half of bankruptcy cases in America are due to medical debt. That is a travesty. Many people do not leave jobs that cause injuries or illnesses because they are afraid to lose their health insurance. Many people are afraid to go to the doctor because of costs, so our people suffer and sicken unnecessarily. We are the richest nation in the world and somehow, we are the only first world country that does not have universal healthcare, and allows our citizens to suffer medically and financially in this way.

The majority of prison are public, actually, but either way, the prison system in the US is corrupt and you are correct, most care is horrific. Although it is in the Constitution as a right, the application does not uphold the sentiment. Overhauling our prison system is another important and worthy cause.

In this post, I’m more trying to point out that once upon a time (1976) the Supreme Court ruled that life without adequate healthcare - something non-incarcerated persons experience often in the “free” world - equates to cruel and unusual punishment. Healthcare should be free for all.

There is so much work to be done in this country to ensure all people are treated like human beings worthy of kindness and care, no matter their circumstances.

Those people were children once who were likely damaged by damaged adults in their lives. If we don’t try to stop injustice for all, it will go on and on and on. Everyone deserves kindness and compassion and care, and giving it to some will not take it away from others. Those veterans on the streets live dangerous lives and one mistake could land them in prison, why would they lose your compassion and concern for safe conditions and medical care then? We do not have limited funds. We are the richest country in the world and the only first world country to treat our citizens this way in not providing healthcare. Our funds are not limited, they are being spent in the wrong ways. Healthcare should be free for all.

No, my friend, that would be a bad plan. The often-for-profit prison system in the US is corrupt and most care is horrific. Although it is in the Constitution as a right, the application does not uphold the sentiment. Overhauling our prison system is another important and worthy cause.

Actually that is close to the point I was hoping to make. I believe everyone should have a right to access adequate healthcare, no matter their circumstances. Poor health seems an obvious deterrent to one’s life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In 1976, the Supreme Court ruled it was cruel and unusual punishment for prisoners to not receive medical care for significant concerns, something nonincarcerated people in the “free” world often struggle with.

The often-for-profit prison system in the US is corrupt and you are correct, most care is horrific and often involves ridiculous costs. A right to healthcare does not mean a right to free healthcare, although I do believe healthcare should be free for all. And although it is in the Constitution as a right, the application does not uphold the sentiment and the care is often terrible. Overhauling our prison system is another important and worthy cause.

The constitutional right for incarcerated people came out of a ruling in 1976, which recognized that restrictions to adequate healthcare for significant concerns was a violation of the 8th Amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment.

Many people also experience this cruel and unusual situation in the “free” world.

Congress and the Supreme Court justices are also funded by taxpayers, but like most Americans, receive the healthcare they do because of the job that they have had. It’s not a constitutional right.

Yes, in 1976, it was ruled that denying incarcerated people healthcare for significant concerns was considered a violation of the 8th Amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment. I posted hoping people would recognize that this is something that happens too often to unincarcerated people in the “free” world.

They receive care via a version of Medicaid, which is an eligibility program with restrictions. It is not a constitutional right.
