"The term fragility distracts us, putting us on the path of shoring up regimes that drive violent extremism through their predatory behavior – because that is often the result of typical efforts to address 'fragility.' We need to flip the script"

Good thread on an important reason why Syria's anti-government protests took place in Daraa this weekend, but not elsewhere. Short answer: because it's not held by government forces in the same way as elsewhere.

Just finished reading due to your recommendation. Frankly, the most clearly written and easily understood article I have personally read on Hezbollah. “Important perspective” indeed. Well done Brian.

This so called “cost plus 50” proposal is whack. US military presence in Europe is first & foremost about US interests. Of course, the presence of US troops in Europe contributes to collective defense of allies but this is a consequence of, not the reason for, the troops.

BIG news today, as (1) 's military patrolled 's NW "demilitarized zone" & granted full access to airspace. Depending on scope and regularity, could be a big step forward in possibly better ensuring a better semblance of stability in NW .
