Blackberry responded to my question. The response does not address John Chen's characterization of Tim Cook's argument, or what that characterization says about Chen's view of personal data security, but at least it's a response.

"Schulte doesn't appear in any of the photos in question". Can't say that. "But prosecutors in Virginia, the federal government told the court, were evidently able to confirm that the pair of hands depicted assaulting the woman belonged to Schulte."

Please note that when the media reports on it, they don't publish unredacted screenshots of raw target data. You are amplifying highly sensitive information that can be researched while balancing threats.

FWIW, I don't think people should be tweeting unredacted screenshots of the raw exfil from an intelligence operation, including IMEIs, phone numbers, text messages. There's a reason we didn't just publish a load of likely Iranian APT data and go 'deal with it'

This hack isn't the only clear example that Securus can't be trusted with sensitive data. In a training manual (freely available online), it includes the real name and address of a person, not demo data. Crazy
