Our public conversation is barely credible. The Tory leadership candidates compete with each to laud a No Deal Brexit. Meanwhile Ford is set to close its Bridgend plant. British Steel is insolvent Manufacturing slumping. A full scale political and economic crisis is unfolding.

“For Pete’s sake, let’s have a bit of friendship, co-operation, and anything else throughout the world to stop these idiotic fights.” Beautiful interview with D-Day veteran George Batts on just now.

A tragic, heartbreaking loss, Barney. So hard to make sense of. I hope you find some closure.

Seems to me a striking lesson of is that Britain is inevitably involved in Europe's destiny, whether we want to be or not. It's where we live. Might make sense to be as constructive and collaborative as possible. We can't "leave".

What’s happening is that it’s dying. Since the ref it has been serving its supporters watered-down Farageism and given them a taste for it but now they can get the hard stuff.

See this piece. My point was that some BP supporters are using the comparison to make the party seem bold and innovative but actually 5-Star itself has proved to have no staying power. Grillo seems to have left Italian politics altogether and disappeared.

Another must-watch from . Looks pretty certain that Peterborough is in the bag for the Brexit party, but just a word to the BP supporters in this who are comparing it to 5-Star: 5-Star is already a spent force in Italy. All it did was open the door for Salvini.

This MP wants to be speaker of the House of Commons. His aim is to close the Commons down so it cannot do its job, and the UK ceases to be a Parliamentary democracy for the period it takes to ram No Deal Brexit through. This person shouldn’t be an MP let alone Speaker.

A prototype Gentleman Jack? Fascinating, little-known British film with score by Vaughan Williams.

All the Tory leadership contenders spelling out that they won't sell off the NHS might ask themselves how we've arrived at a world where it's necessary for Tory leadership contenders to spell out that they won't sell off the NHS.

Great picture of Peters Tower in Lympstone, Devon. I wrote several chapters of The Rotters’ Club here.

True. Just picking up a sense that British pragmatism was seen as an important counterbalance to extremism on all sides, and now it seems to have gone.

Conversations with Italians over the last few days have brought home the reputational damage done by Brexit. Seen as starting domino effect of populist surges across Europe, and some anger (and sadness) felt towards once-respected Brits for being the ones to kick it off.
