Lots of Democrats I’m reading are sure that Republicans are killing themselves in the midterms by standing by BK. Lots of Republicans I’m reading are sure that Democrats are killing themselves in the midterms by treating BK unfairly.

What’s more because The Discourse is conducted essentially exclusively by college graduates, the perspective of non-graduates — which is most people — tends to be lost and it’s really critical to have accurate polling of external reality.

Yes, I agree that pieces by confirmed abusers are tremendously fraught and should be handled with care and sometimes not published at all.

Also, if your premise is that the left is doing those things in 2018, with Donald Trump in the White House, in what sense will Trump 2020 provide a "safe harbor from the left"? This is a thin, easily demolished pretext for allying with Trump

My piece correctly reports that we don't know exactly why he resigned, and is not only about the reason in any case--it also notes what different observers say and considers the implications of those standards, regardless of whether they were the ones that got him fired.

So in the name of opposing "false accusations" you're going to invite the guy who accused Ted Cruz's father of complicity in the JFK assassination and Barack Obama of being foreign born? Maybe you can all chant "lock her up" to accentuate the cognitive dissonance?

I don’t think I conflate those goals—I deal with the subjects separately when plumbing the implications of what different observers said about the case

So given your notions of harm what standard would you have editors apply to submissions from men accused of abuse, acquitted at trial, but plausibly guilty of bad behavior?

Contrary to your false and pejorative characterizations, my piece, which I doubt you read, airs all the facts that the NYRB essay left out and criticizes the omissions

This was a highly publicized case that resulted in a trial where he was acquitted of most charges after denying them and apologized to have one dismissed. Given that public record and the vague, incomplete account in NYRB I don’t see it adding new harm

First—I would still like to know what specific passage you’re objecting to as an editing failure that led to harm. Second—it seems to me that the essay’s very real flaw was to misleadingly understate the number and severity of the allegations. Third,
