There are human rights & legal implications of under-reporting civilian casualties in conflict. Lack of solid reporting post-strikes feeds a vicious circle of underestimating civcas when planning later strikes - via in :

As of 26 April, had admitted to 883 civilian casualties in Iraq & Syria since 2014. The UK MoD has consistently claimed they have been responsible for precisely zero of these. This is pure fantasy.

When raised concerns about civilian casualties in Mosul, British Army General Rupert Jones, called us “disrespectful” and claimed that we “have no understanding of the brutality of warfare”. His own colleagues are now echoing our findings

So it took a week to pick and strike targets after Douma... If only the civilians of Raqqa had merited such meticulous planning. Was that because the world wasn’t watching? Well we were - new Amnesty report on the lengths not taken to protect civilians in Raqqa coming soon.

Australia would consider compensating civilian victims of Mosul strike it investigated and admitted thanks to research. Will the US, UK and France grow up and do the same? , ,

The young Iraqi man who told investigators he lost two loved ones in an air strike, now knows it was likely an Australian fired missile that hit his family's home. tells of the phone call to inform him - and how he responded.

needs to take a leaf out of the ADF’s book. Civilian casualties in Mosul and Raqqa are not going to go away. States responsible should engage with reality sooner rather than later. The longer this is brushed off the worse it will be – for victims and perpetrators alike.

As noted, "It turned out it was the Coalition which needed to further investigate, and in the case of the May 3rd strike, both the alliance and the Australian Defence Force have now accepted responsibility."

has not reacted well to AI's research suggesting it killed civilians. Former Coalition Commander Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend "challenge(d) the people from Amnesty International... to first research their facts and make sure they are speaking from a position of authority,”

For example, the UK DoD continues to fly in the face of logic, maintaining it killed not a single civilian in Iraq/Syria despite carrying out an estimated 3,400 airstrikes. The French also bombed and says the same

The Coaltion now accepts its strikes have killed 855 civilians since the start of operations in 2014 – a 10th of the figure estimated to have died in Mosul alone. Individual Coalition states, meanwhile, have not assessed their culpability as Australia has in this case.

Hats off to the Australian Defence Forces (ADF) for investigating and accepting responsibility for airstrikes in Mosul which killed civilians in May 2017. It begs the question why others can’t do the same?

15 years without accountability only led to more conflict. It’s time, on this 15 year anniversary of the invasion, to give accountability a chance – or Iraqi civilians could be paying the price again another 15 years from now

If – as the Coalition () maintains – it could drop munitions upon Iraqi/Syrian cities at low cost to civilian life, then it should release accurate information about the strike locations and bombs dropped. This would allow investigations and prove it has nothing to hide
