Since then, we've seen influence ops on Reddit, Medium, 4chan, Gab, WhatsApp, citizen journalism sites, and pseudo-news sites, to name a few. FB and Twitter are often where it bubbles up, but over-focusing on them misses out a huge part of the problem.

Bear in mind, though, there's a danger of over-focusing on Facebook and Twitter. Info and influence ops rarely stick to just those platforms. Even in September 2014, the Russian troll farm was on FB, Twitter, YouTube, Wikipedia, and mobile phone networks.

As ever, worth reading this piece from on the media environment ahead of the EU elections. Interesting how Poland stands out. H/t

It's not in the Mozilla copy - they're one who got it right, so should be praised as such.

The problem is the ones who pitch themselves as experts, and still do this.

There's a worrying number of people out there writing about "misinformation campaigns". If it's deliberate, it's +disinformation+. Misinfo is when you can't establish intent. You can't have a "misinformation campaign." get it right:

Now: think about 2016, the Podesta leaks, and the Steele dossier. Then think ahead to 2020, and the risk of weaponised kompromat. How to ensure due diligence, and analysis of source and intent, when the U.S. election comes into sight?

It's definitely newsworthy: senior national politician discussing potentially corrupt practices. The journalists have done what due diligence they could. But it's still a kompromat (compromising material) operation, presumably done for political effect.

But here's the thing: they don't know who set this elaborate sting up, including a fake oligarch's niece, back in 2017. Or why. Or why they waited until now, although you might be forgiven for thinking of the European elections on Thursday.

This video makes amazing watching (in German). A three-hour drive. Pickup at a petrol station. Handover in a hotel. Checking and re-checking the videos. Watch the faces of and as they tell the story.

A lot of due diligence went into this: - check the videos; - check the translation; - open-source the location; - check the paperwork. Verification counts.

Amazing and thought-provoking story from on the sudden fall of Austria's far-right leader. Secret recordings. Explosive, and devastating, but who set them up? H/t

Here's my favourite, from Niger: an eagle-eyed user pointing out that the banner picture showed a mosque in Morocco.

One of the interesting things here is how often users called these pages out as false. Case in point from Nigeria.

And here's a Togo-focused page, run from Israel. Gotta love Facebook's page transparency feature. So many odd connections show up.
