The Trump administration now apparently realizes that the "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran isn't working. I explained why it wouldn't work back in August:

I do agree the IAEA should investigate the info from the archive and determine what it needs to inspect. Do you agree that we should wait for more evidence before claiming Iran has an active nuclear weapons program?

Literally the only point I'm trying to make is that Bolton shouldn't claim Iran has an active nuclear weapons program if there's no evidence of it. Unlike you, I'm not going to assume Iran is cheating because they did in the past. I'll wait for the evidence, thanks.

I support the IAEA inspecting anything it deems suspicious. What I don't support are claims about an active weapons program that have no evidence behind them. The IAEA and US intel community have consistently said Iran is in compliance with JCPOA, which forbids weapons activity

I'm talking about Bolton's claims that Iran maintains "nuclear ambitions" and is "strategically committed to achieving deliverable nuclear weapons." Nothing in the so-called Atomic Archive establishes a current intention to develop the bomb.

Apparently when I ask for evidence to support Bolton's claim that Iran is actively seeking nuclear weapons, I "defend and protect the horrific Iranian regime." I prefer to think of it as trying to prevent false intel from being used to start another war in the Middle East. YMMV

1/ Why are so many nuclear folks keyed up about the Missile Defense Review? Missile defenses are just defensive right? Who could argue with that? Well, it’s not that straightforward. Missile defenses have long been pursued to support offensive counterforce strategies. Example 👇🏽

So as long as Bolton doesn't provide evidence to back up his claims, there will be no comment/analysis? That seems a little problematic.

How about this one, from ten days ago: "we have little doubt that Iran's leadership is still strategically committed to achieving deliverable nuclear weapons." With that context, it's pretty clear what he means by "nuclear ambitions."

Your organization had no problem questioning the claims of the Obama administration and even the W. Bush administration on Iraq’s nuclear program. Now you’re deferential to Bolton’s claims of an active Iranian weapons program, which have no evidence behind them. Why?

I agree the IAEA should investigate anything it deems suspicious. What I don't get is why your organization is silent when Bolton makes far stronger claims about Iran's nuclear intentions than your reports can support. You don't seem to mind that he's using them irresponsibly.

Yep, that's right. But Bolton made a much more explicit claim recently, so we know what he means:

Ok, but is that the same as saying a county has active nuclear ambitions? Also, now that I have your attention, would you care to comment on Bolton’s claim that Iran is “strategically committed to achieving deliverable nuclear weapons?”

I agree it would be nice if there was no enrichment or ballistic missiles in Iran. I just don’t see it as feasible.

I apologize if I offended you. I struggle to see how my tone was any harsher than yours.

Also, even if you think Iran does want nuclear weapons, the JCPOA is a good idea:

I think you're sophisticated enough to understand that some countries view it as desirable to have a latent nuclear capability. That doesn't mean they're ultimately going to build a nuclear weapon.

You seem to be conflating technical capabilities with ultimate intent. Our own IC has been saying for years that it's unclear what their ultimate aim is.
