So: I *may* have told the kids is their Uncle for a laugh, which has now resulted in daughter telling her school she is related to a major Hollywood actor and I’m struggling to find a way out of this situation. Life lesson learned...

Well done and for keeping the pressure up inside government and delivering the right result

Striking how many of the good things this government does are the result of backbench pressure on No 10 and the Treasury. Andrew Mitchell is right: in a hung Parliament power has shifted from the Cabinet Room to the Commons.

Not sure if this is what was agreed but it sounds like a sensible and pragmatic way forward.

Yesterday I criticised Israel's handling of the protests at the Gaza border. I should not have been so quick to judge. We now learn that the 50 of those killed were Hamas terrorists. Israel had an absolute right to defend itself against such attacks.

I am not arguing for the whole transition to be extended beyond Dec 2020, just the customs union. If there are legal obstacles to that, we should move to a temporary customs union that expires in March 2022.

Isn't the absolute level of productivity in Japan surprisingly low? If so that would partly explain stronger growth...

Yesterday was a shameful day. Yes, Hamas exploited - even organised - much of the protests. Yes, no one would have been killed if they’d not been charging at the border. But no one can tell me that the correct response was to fire live ammunition at unarmed Palestinians.

It is because I am a true friend of Israel that I hold them to a higher standard than the murderous thugs of Hamas. The Israeli government must show far greater restraint than in recent days.

I disagree with and about acceptability of staying in a customs union and the Single Market but at least they are being honest about the costs and constraints that would impose

Something deeply dishonest about pretence that we can get all the benefits of membership of the customs union and the single market without accepting free movement of people, ECJ oversight and a large financial contribution

Another insightful piece by He is right that we need to invest more in different models of social and affordable housing to help young people become home-owners

In a year disfigured by the resurgence of anti-semitism across Europe it is especially heart-warming to see Europeans in their millions voting for Israel to win Mazeltov

So much to celebrate in the life of who left life as she lived it: full of purpose and hope, loved and admired by all who knew her. An example to us all.

Do those who have slammed the compromise have an alternative plan that will a) deliver an independent trade policy by the next election, and b) win the support of a majority of MPs? I suspect not..
