Argentine FM :“The threats exceeded those of ISIS. National team players faced a whole range of threats that came through the Internet and created a very negative image about the fact there were about to play in Israel. They were nervous & preferred not to play match”

I don’t have to understand Argentina’s football culture to know that saying that players didn’t pay attention to the Gaza developments (knowing they’re headed to Israel) and that no one cared or identified with the movement, is a prejudicial conclusion. Show me a quote.

Riots; and wouldn’t have talked about traveling to Jerusalem less than a month later with their coaches; is nonsensical. I don’t know Argentinian footballers, nor speak Spanish. But I’ve interviewed pro athletes, and this approach infantilizes them. That’s my point

We’re getting into the weeds here; but yes— athletes are aware of major international news, have opinions of them; discuss them. It’s as true for NBA and NFL stars as international soccer players. The idea that players weren’t aware, of let’s say, the May 14th

The Associated Press at least confirms cancellation; and Iawmakers already saying its fait accompli. Messi isn’t the team. None of the other 10 starters had a strong opinion about Israel’s use of force? Expressed it to management? It didn’t factor in any way? Please

But the idea that the players weren’t aware of the Gaza situation, the deaths and weeks long rioting, the debate over use-of-force; and that this issue “no way” it factored into their unease about the game-it beggars belief. Will there be an quote today from a starting player?

It’s easy to understand concerns about death threats; family safety; travel time and prep; mass international protests; but of course the Israel-Palestinian Gaza violence was a big issue for the players, coaches, management, government.

That’s a tough position to believe, reasonably. Even Argentina’s national football association VP said canceling was the right call: “The stuff that happens in those places, where they kill so many people, as a human being you can’t accept that”.

Tamika Mallory demonstrates here that she has no knowledge of the history of region prior to 1948 or of what happened in 48. No mention of British colonialism, Jews already in the region, Mizrahi refugees, the U.N. partisan plan for 2 states. This is a deeply ahistorical take.
