While I’m not sure that USAID funded this particular project, their signs are posted on other roads leading to Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank. The Qataris had a hand in installing lighting posts on this road (called Wadi Al-Nar - Valley of Fire) as well.

And if I’m not mistaken, the ‘widening’ of some of these apartheid routes some years ago (they were much more treacherous to drive on beforehand) was funded by non other than USAID. America could always be relied on to beautify the occupation.

After the interrogation was over, I asked the agent “You guys ask me for a foreign passport every time. Why is that”? Her response: “It’s our job”. Of course, had I been in a more calm mood, I’d have told her the above: I’m not an Israeli citizen, you have no right to ask me.

While Israeli borders agents can ask *Israeli citizens* whether they hold another passport (because they’d not be allowed to use them to enter), they really have no right to ask a non-citizen the same. Especially if they are creating databases of Palestinians with foreign PPs.

The truth is, the Israelis have been asking Palestinian travelers frequently about whether or not they carry “another passport”, and at one point used to stamp any Western passport with a special “fuck you” stamp that indicated the holder had a Palestinian ID.

She demanded to know why I did not have an American passport even though I’ve been living in the US for over 20 years. This went on (with me finding excuses) under I finally blurted out “It’s because of taxation”. That’s when she finally relented.

For the umpteenth time, the Israeli border agent at the Allenby Bridge asked me if I have a “another (i.e., American) passport”. They have been asking me this for years, and I always say no. This time, however, she spent few minutes grilling me about it.
