Definitely true. But the Russians are already convinced that we use aegis ashore for exactly that purpose

Would need to take a closer look at the munition once some info comes out, but the SDF likes to use the same systems for ground and ship launched ASCMs. Unlikely that MOD would develop the system solely for use on TELs by the GSDF - I would expect a ship or air launched variant.

Folks like @DEricSayers have written about the wisdom of encouraging American allies to adopt intermediate range systems in the first island chain - this is a good example of what that could perhaps look like

This has been reported before, but there are some more nuggets in the latest Jiji report.
First, that this will be a mobile, ground-based system operated by the GSDF. Second, that the system is scheduled for introduction into service by 2026. twitter.com/mgerrydoyle/st…

Agreed completely. And hard to imagine that waffling until the last day will really endear him to Ishiba.

Postscript to the sub saga: Onodera and Abe publicly say that this is no big deal and has happened regularly for 15 years now. "We are looking to improve our operational skills, this is not done with a particular country in mind" twitter.com/Sankei_news/st…

I thought that was weird as well...one would think that journalistic outfits could have done the basic research to learn about other submarine port visits in 南シナ海. But perhaps writing to reflect the first confirmation of a deployment would have been more accurate.

That's another good point, but here's what I mean. Below is a screenshot from a quick google search for the report in Japanese-language media. All of the dailies, Jiji, Chunichi etc all have 中国牽制 in the headline on the article. That sounds to me like someone pushing a message pic.twitter.com/g1xVZUnRAt

Yet another poll showing rising approval for the Abe cabinet. Sankei/FNN: approval at 49.3% (+3.7) / disapproval at 41.8% (-2.6).
No surprise, but that doesn't translate into support for Abe's constitutional revision proposal (during the extraordinary Diet session in the fall) twitter.com/MasuzoeYoichi/…

I take your point Alessio, but I think that in this context it's important to note that all of the Japanese-language reporting on this has specifically used the vocabulary 中国を牽制する狙い. I think MOD specifically wanted to push that message.

Yes, I was trying to puzzle out why the movements were leaked. Other MSDF subs have visited countries in the region, but the article specifically discusses anti-sub drills

Left from Kure and transited through the Bashi channel on its way to the SCS -- this is consistent with the deployment of MSDF submarines to cut off maritime choke points.

Looks like the submarine Kurushio (Oyashio-class) is in transit with the task force led by Kaga.
So in total that's Kaga (Izumo-class), Inazuma (Murasame-Class) and Suzutsuki (Akizuki-class). That's a serious show of force in the SCS.
