We know the risks associated with tobacco and nicotine. It is easier to prevent our children from becoming addicted in the first place than to treat the addiction later, or even worse, treat the cancers and diseases caused by smoking.

95 percent of smokers start before the age of 21. Today WA joins the growing number of states and 400+ cities that recognize the opportunity to save lives by raising the age for purchasing tobacco and vaping products to 21. The law WILL save lives.

Despite snow in many parts of the state, means that we will continue to see lower water supplies across Washington and we need to plan now for the impact.

Today I declared a drought emergency in the Methow, Okanogan and Upper Yakima watersheds. We must take steps to ensure that Washingtonians have the water they need to sustain their farms and livestock.

I had a wonderful time speaking at today about WA's transition to and celebrating students who registered thousands of their peers to in 2018. Spending the morning with these bright, forward-thinking students gives me hope for our future. !

Today I was honored to sign Brennen's law, giving patients access to services in a more timely manner. Brennen took his own life while waiting too long for help. With this law, we can start to ensure other families don't have the same tragic experience.

We’ve started a paid family leave program offering some of the most progressive benefits in the nation to all WA workers — regardless of their employer. Closing the is complex, but we're up to the challenge. We have a lot more work to do, but we're doing it.

WA is ranked the best place to work partly because we have rules to ensure , accommodations for pregnant workers, sexual harassment protections and laws prohibiting pay secrecy in the workplace. We also have strong unions that raise the bar for all workers.

Today marks , symbolizing how far into the year women have to work to catch up to the earnings of men from the previous year. And women of color have it worse — nationally they’ll need to work several more weeks or even months to achieve equal pay.

There is so much at stake in the count. We must be ready, proactive and prepared to make sure every Washingtonian is counted in every part of our state.

It’s more than just disappointing. It is irresponsible. We need an administration that believes in the science of both gravity and climate change. We need a national mobilization to drive innovation across every sector of our economy.

Unfortunately, the Trump administration isn’t just failing to act — they are setting the fire. They're rolling back the in a massive giveaway to polluters, attacking fuel economy and clean car standards, cutting renewable energy by more than $2 billion and more.

There are more jobs in fighting than denying it. We are growing clean energy jobs by the bucketful, in communities urban, suburban and rural. It’s time for the federal government to embrace those jobs.

I’m proud of everything we’ve done in WA state — and in states across the country — to start defeating . We're leading the charge to build strong, low-carbon economies. But without leadership from the federal government, we won’t be able to do enough fast enough.

I’m just about to deliver an important message to the U.S. House: Bipartisan governors and mayors from across the country are still all in on climate, but we need Congress to get back in the game if we’re going to beat this threat.

It removes state flexibility, rips away food assistance from 755,000 vulnerable Americans, worsens our homelessness crisis and fails to achieve the Trump administration’s stated goal of improving self-sufficiency. It is a cruel policy that damages people and businesses alike.
