There is a wonderful Onion article waiting to be written here that, although neither side was looking for war, they fell madly, deeply into war. (“KJU did not respond when asked to comment.”)

This is why Trump’s “make a deal with us and I promise you’ll be rich,” talking point won’t work. A key element of the regime’s ideological narrative is that Iran’s independence from, and defiance of, the US is its real source of strength.

I also don’t think a “strategic decision to renounce,” is achievable or necessary in all cases. I’m comfortable with some inconsistency.

Sure, but somewhat easier to say a country has met that threshold when they’ve actually had weapons and given them up. I was mostly thinking about those who never had weapons (to include those along the latency/hedging spectrums).

Secretary Perry confirms that the U.S. is insisting on the Additional Protocol as part of any 123 agreement with Saudi. This is the right move (and hopefully we're also asking for more...).

Interesting questions follow: What constitutes a “strategic decision to renounce nuclear weapons?” And do we use that criteria evenly across countries? (My quick answer on the latter: No.) Also - is that the right (achievable?) benchmark to measure against?

Once again, Trump only mentions the nuclear issue (no ref to other demands). And requirements vague other than Iran can’t have nukes. Follow up Q for Trump should be: What can Iran do to prove that they won’t develop nuclear weapons?

Agree that the regional situation and U.S. domestic politics for each is different, but there are striking parallels in his (Trump’s) approach.

The similarities between his approaches on North Korea and Iran are incredible.

Sanctions aren’t the missing ingredient in the Iran strategy. That’s part of the problem with the max pressure approach: U.S. now left with few meaningful non-military options to respond. U.S. strat was also one of coercion, but now admin increasingly finding it needs to deter.

The intended message/logic would have been: See what almost happened? And I stopped it. Now do something to help me.

I’m not sure what it is, but I think that’s a distinct possibility.

Third possibility: The recall was his intent all along. Remember this? Under normal circumstances this would be tinfoil hat territory, but there’s precedent (and these aren’t normal circumstances).

Lots of unknowns here, but strikes “on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries” within Iran would have almost certainly led to an Iranian retaliation against U.S. targets in the region.

Somewhat ironic, given that the administration's chief complaint about the JCPOA and Obama approach (and reason for withdrawal from the deal) was that it put nukes front and center to the exclusion of Iran's other malign activities. 2/2

With Iran re-starting its nuclear activities, and Trump seemingly more worried about nukes than other items on the 12 demands, it seems increasingly likely that if and when negotiations resume, the nuclear program will be front and center. 1/2
