Discussions of emotional labor are not employing the term "labor" to quantify effort and extract payment for our own enrichment. What they strive to do is enable those socialized to perform this labor to render it visible in a society that measures one's value based on what they have to offer. There is dignity in being valued and feeling like one's contribution is vital and necessary. The act of providing valuable labor and being able to depend on others for their contributions is what fosters belonging and well-being.
