littleBits makes technology kits that are fun, easy-to-use, and infinitely creative. The kits are composed of electronic building blocks that are color-coded, magnetic, and make complex technology simple and fun. Together they’re interchangeable in millions of different ways to empower kids to invent anything - from a sibling alarm, to a wireless robot, to a digital instrument.
Our kids spend more than 11 hours with electronic devices every day, but most of them don’t know how they work, or how to make their own. At littleBits, we believe we have to empower kids to be creators and inventors with technology, and not just consumers of it.
See littleBits in actionWe deeply believe in the power of play as a proven educational method. We stand on the shoulders of giants and have studied learning through play from the teachings of Seymour Papert and experiments of Mitch Resnick.
Gender neutrality is a design principle we hold at the heart of our products: in how we showcase inventions, in our partnerships, and in our message. We believe it’s how we get girls AND boys interested in STEM/STEAM. As a result, 30-40% of our kid inventors are girls (a number that’s unheard of in technology!).
We created littleBits to be used by everyone, regardless of age. Since people pick up technology at different paces, we've designed littleBits so everyone can learn at their own speed. That’s why we’re used at every level of education, from elementary school all the way up to university and beyond.
We believe invention is a universal skill. That’s why our products and experiences cut across language and national barriers and economic divides. Since the first days of littleBits, 25% of our inventors have been outside the US, and we have more than 300 global chapters spanning from Jakarta to Cape Town to Texas.
We believe in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math -- but also crucially Art. It’s a movement championed by the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and adopted by institutions worldwide. Because of a focus on the arts, our STEAM Student Set can be used from math class to entrepreneurship to grammar to robotics.
littleBits was born of the Open Hardware and Maker Movements. We’re building a community of collaborators, so our designs are publicly available. Anyone can experiment, share, and adapt them to their needs. We have a page dedicated to sharing community inventions and educator lessons, just to inspire others.
