Chris Aldrich
Chris Aldrich is a talent manager, producer, and publisher who lives in Los Angeles. He tinkers on the IndieWeb in his spare time.
My primary site (BoffoSocko.com) is powered by WordPress while I also maintain a secondary self-hosted "social stream" powered by Known. I'm also running two other WordPress installs Boffo Socko Publishing and Boffo Socko Books that are indieweb compatible in various stages.
Itches
- Check out IndieMark for additional ideas of things to add to my site
- Spread concept of IndieWeb into Academe as a means of communication and syndication of ideas (whether by samizdat or not)
- Play around more with IndieWeb feed readers Woodwind (as Monocle "died")
- Browse to-do list and see what I can help there
- Figure out how to better segregate content on site and make subsections of it more easily subscribe-able
- Add recipe support to Post Kinds
- Add a linkblog (archive page view) from bookmarks
- GWG indicates: It is easily themeable...you don't need a custom page. It is just customizing the archive page in the theme. In the latest version of the post kinds plugin, your theme can do a custom template for the kind. If you read the changelog.
WordPress
- Improve mf2 markup on my site, especially for content and comments
- Improve rel=feed set up on site to allow better parsing for Bridgy with respect to instagram likes/comments
- Improve mf2 markup for twentysixteen theme (perhaps upcoming twentyseventeen?)
- Fix div issue in 2016 theme https://github.com/WordPress/twentysixteen/issues/470
- Improve mf2 markup for Independent Publisher (5/16/16 David Shanske has made a start on this via https://github.com/raamdev/independent-publisher/pull/224/commits/e8d4288fa514e391a5875b4efc93c36f1f4520d8
- Assist David Shanske and others in WordPress_Outreach_Club on integrating IndieWeb principles into WordPress; as a minimum try to dogfood it and provide worthwhile field testing and feedback on various (Github) modules. Help with ideas for improved UX/UI and workflows for allowing the various plugins to better integrate.
- Find a better way in WordPress to sort/differentiate between likes, comments, pingbacks, potentially using a facepile set up. David Shanske has Semantic Comments which may do this. He's also made a note that in addition to Github Semantic Comments some of the relevant code lives in his theme mf2_s; Independent Publisher theme on GitHub (circa 5/15/16) has a custom comments.php that does an excellent job of doing this.
- Check out Bridgy Publish functionality either in repo or WordPress.org
- Create custom page with mf2 for better checkin workflow via OwnYourCheckin
- Figure out manual webmention to port previous instagram comments/likes to site (those going forward are covered)
- Try out Simple Location (6/9/16 GWG will be coming back to this shortly)
- Continue playing around with Ozh plugin to own all past Twitter data and be able to display.
- Get Syndication Links to look more like Jetpack plugins
- Get rid of "Syndicated to" text in syndicated copies
- Check out WP Peoplemention
Known
- Spend some time helping out on documentation for the platform (and self-hosters) and integrating plugins
- Fix the Video post type on my Known site - for some reason it's pretending to be the Comics plugin. (Others have had issues with this plugin too.)
- Update self-hosted Known site and play around with internals
- Play around with other community plugins
Working On
- Set up an IndieWebCamp outpost with meetings in Los Angeles
- Spend more time in the WordPress community, particularly to do outreach for Indieweb concept
- Regularly attending WordPress Pasadena Meetup
- Attended WordCamp OC in early July '16
- Registered for WordCamp LA and submitted IndieWeb session proposal
- Fix custom code so that auto-posting from ownyourgram or other services like Woodwind doesn't automatically syndicate out to Facebook, Twitter, et al. via Jetpack in WordPress. This Jetpack functions.php snippet should work, but I'm having problems with it not triggering things anyway. I suspect it's the e-content microformat not closing early enough in my theme.
- Reading through microformats2 spec and contemplating updating current theme to support it better
- Fix h-entry on posts--some data is missing; in particular figure out a way to add tag: img class="u-photo" src="…" / to the photo on individual posts to get photo into h-entry. Also wrap category and tag portions with tag: a class="p-category" href="…" … /a to get categories in as well.
Finished
- Introduced IndieWeb concepts at DrupalCampLA at UC Irvine in 2015
- Added proper User setup on IndieWebCamp.com; created redirect from older/more awkward one
- Finally figured out how to properly add a template so my name/photo popup in groups and discussions like so
Chris Aldrich.
- Added myself to list of IRC_People
WordPress
- Finished PESOS of all Instagram data so that I own the entirety of what's in that silo.
- Add a more extensive h-card on my site
- Updated to more modern responsive theme that is as IndieWeb compatible as possible
- Set up Micropub endpoint and ownyourgram to publish photos to my own site.
- Updated IndieWeb Press This on WordPress site; made some suggestions on GitHub for changes
- 3/25/16 Finished setting up my first podcast feed by uploading audio files to Boffo Socko Books.
- Configure SNAP and compare it with current set up which simply uses JetPack publicize
- Added in mid-March and seems to work well, particularly with Syndication Links
- Tumblr certainly has far better support in SNAP than Jetpack
- Twitter seems roughly equivalent
- Nice that SNAP allows easy secondary posting later on
- Facebook will require some tweaking and formatting, but seems workable and has more flexibility
- Still using JetPack for G+ as it requires paid SNAP pro version
- Added in mid-March and seems to work well, particularly with Syndication Links
- Given that Bridgy seems to be giving webmentions for my Twitter @username and assigning them to the homepage of my domain, figure out a way to "archive" these comments into a category other than "approved" (so they don't show up on the homepage), or spam or trash (where they'd be automatically deleted/purged.) See https://codex.wordpress.org/Comments_Screen
- For the moment, I'm assigning them to http://boffosocko.com/twitter-mentions/ (perhaps there's a better answer down the road)
- 5/16/16 Streamlined micropub PESOS of Instagram and made modifications to site to allow Bridgy to import comments/likes.
- 5/17/16 Set up PESOS of checkins via OwnYourCheckin
- Late June: Added Hypothes.is support and plugin for keeping notes.
- Early July: fixed issues with Instagram PESOS and finalized workflow
- 7/14/16 Added documentation to Syndication Links
- 7/19/16 This week got the sharedaddy JetPack "like" functionality to filter out of syndicated copies to Tumblr.
- 7/20/16 Added mf2 support for recipe via JetPack code which I hope will be included in the future.
Known
- Set up a self-hosted Known site
- Set up Woodwind and configured for use with Known - wrote about configuring action urls for use with Known
- Configure URL forward app to better integrate IndieWeb experience on Android mobile platform
- Played around for a bit and wrote post on URL Forward and competitor - still has to be better way for using mobile and indieweb
- Updated to Known 0.9.2 on 4/30/16
- Configured Recipes and Reviews and finally got them working
- Add github support for Known with KnownGithub
