Women in Engineering

Making Twitter the model workplace for women engineers

Our Women in Engineering group aims to inspire girls and women to pursue education and careers in engineering. It also inspires us to think bigger about the impact we could have on the industry. The initiatives led by WomEng help make Twitter a great place to work, across engineering and other organizations – and this is something that's important to me, our entire leadership team, and employees across the company.
-Alex Roetter, VP, Engineering

Women in Engineering

@WomEng is a group of women, men, engineers and non-engineers who share the same passion to build a diverse and inclusive workplace at Twitter. These are our commitments:

Support the advancement of women in engineering at Twitter and in the industry.

Encourage and inspire girls and women to pursue technical studies and careers.

Create an inclusive and respectful culture for women at Twitter.

Internal programs

  • Research and track workplace best practices for promotion, compensation, recognition, and hiring. Partner with Human Resources to experiment and implement those practices.
  • Strive for equal representation on speaker panels at events we host, and encourage women engineers to present at technical conferences.
  • Pilot professional development programs for women in engineering such as peer coaching, mentorship, negotiating and presentation training.
  • Host roundtables with executives to increase dialogue and provide more visibility for women engineers.

Community outreach

  • Sponsor non-profit organizations dedicated to promoting STEM and computer science education for girls and women. We are proud to be a seed partner of Girls Who Code.
  • Encourage and support employees to teach and mentor middle school, high school and college students as well as women from nontraditional programs such as HackBright and TechWomen.
  • Partner with Chime for Change to host an annual hackathon to help global nonprofits find tech-driven solutions that support women and girls around the world.
  • Previously supported local community organizations, such as Girl Develop It, Technovation Challenge, CS Kickstart at UC Berkeley, Girls Teaching Girls To Code at Stanford, CS4SF, Black Girls Code, and more.
