Ottawa police are trying to identify a man who walked into a hotel in April and "without hesitation or provocation" slammed a skateboard into a clerk's head. It happened at about 12:39 a.m. on Sunday, April 24, in the lobby of the hotel in the 100 block of Cooper Street, near Elgin Street, police said in a media release issued more than six weeks later. There are a number of hotels on that block, but police refused to say where the clerk worked.

Farid Benzenati says he was unable to sleep last night after witnessing a violent dog attack on his neighbour in Montreal. Christiane Vadnais, 55, was mauled in the backyard of her home in Montreal's east end Wednesday afternoon by what police describe as a pit bull. Police initially said Vadnais was killed by the dog, but late Thursday morning, they said an autopsy was needed to confirm that hypothesis.
Richmond RCMP tweeted Wednesday they had stopped a moving vehicle after spotting a couple having sex while driving. "It's obviously incredibly dangerous for a number of reasons," he said, adding that the distracted driver could wind up in an accident and airbags are not meant to be deployed when two people are in the same seat.

An Alberta man whose acquittal on a sexual assault charge was overturned amid controversy over Judge Robin Camp's questions to the complainant cursed as he was denied bail on Wednesday afternoon. The case originally was tried before Camp — now a Federal Court judge — when he was an Alberta provincial judge and Wagar was acquitted. In November 2015, the Canadian Judicial Council announced it was reviewing Camp's conduct in the original trial after a complaint from four law professors at Dalhousie University and the University of Calgary that described Camp as "dismissive, if not contemptuous" toward sexual assault laws and the rules of evidence.

Mark Fischer of Peel Regional Police said the woman, also 76, was struck by a vehicle driven by her husband at a Shell gas station at Erin Mills Pkwy and Fowler Street. Fischer said the woman, who suffered serious injuries, was first taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto by Ornge, Ontario's air ambulance service. Fischer said the woman was hit while the couple was putting air into the vehicle's tires.

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko wants all retested doping samples from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics to be thrown out because of alleged flaws in the reanalysis process. "A laboratory which falsely declared a positive test result must be stripped of its accreditation and all the samples it tested must be declared invalid," Mutko told Russia's Tass news agency on Wednesday. The IOC has reported 55 positive findings in retesting of stored samples from the 2008 Beijing Games and 2012 London Olympics.
Two Toronto mothers say they are concerned about graphic anti-abortion flyers being delivered to homes in two west-end neighbourhoods and one is taking it upon herself to remove them from mailboxes. Liz Phillips, who lives in Roncesvalles, and Maya Bastian, who lives in Parkdale, say the flyers are disturbing, inappropriate and being viewed by children picking up the mail. Phillips and Bastian say teenage girls delivered the flyers to their respective neighbourhoods this week.

A man shot to death in a vehicle near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue East has been identified by his uncle in B.C. Sohan Deo confirmed to CBC News by phone from Vancouver that the man killed Tuesday in a white luxury vehicle was his nephew, Sukh Deo. Toronto police have not identified the victim of the fatal shooting in Cowbell Lane, one block east of Yonge Street running south from Eglinton Avenue East.

A massive sinkhole near Parliament in Ottawa caused a gas leak, knocked out power and forced crews to evacuate nearby businesses including the Rideau Centre on Wednesday. The sinkhole appeared near a construction site at the corner of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive. A van parked nearby fell in the hole as it grew but officials confirm there have been no reported injuries. Officials from the City of Ottawa said that it is “too soon” to know the cause.

Team Rubicon, a specially trained team of volunteer military veterans and first responders, is doing it for them — and they can barely keep up with the demand. The neighbour of a 55-year-old Montreal woman who died after apparently being attacked by a pit bull says he was shocked by what he saw. Farid Benzenati said he arrived home from work at around 5 p.m. and noticed a dog playing with what he thought was "a large object" in the next backyard. Police said the dog, which appeared to be a pit bull, was standing by the body and acting aggressively.
