Are you the parent of a girl who is interested in technology, mobile and games?  At Black Girls CODE we host community oriented "girls only" hackathons for girls between the ages of 12 - 17 which allow students to participate in creating solutions to social issues within their communities while they build their skills, confidence, experience and have lots of fun!

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where people come together to solve problems by building apps.  Participants bring their passion, skills and experience to the event.  Guided hackathons for youth are education focused and expose them to the software development process, encourage teamwork and reinforce their creativity as young people.

Learn to build apps

Girls attending the hackathon will learn how to brainstorm as a team, research their ideas and design an app.  Experienced mentors work with teams over a weekend to build amazing mobile apps and digital tools.  At the end of the hackathon, teams will demo their solutions on stage, receiving feedback from judges and be eligible for prizes!

2015 Locations

There will be multiple hackathons hosted by Black Girls CODE this year. The dates and locations below may be tentative unless otherwise noted.

Oakland  June 19th - 21st, 2015

New York July 24th -26th, 2015

Who will be there?

This hackathon is open to girls of all experience levels.  Previous computer camp and STEM exposure is great but if you’re new to coding and building apps, this is an open invite for you to register as well!

  • Girls of all experience levels are welcome
  • Girls entering 6th through 12th grade next year
  • Girls from underrepresented groups in computer science

What will be provided?

At the hackathon students will be provided with laptops, whiteboards and writing materials to make their ideas come alive.  Mentors will work with teams to help guide them through the curriculum and keep things on track.  Healthy meals and snacks will keep the students energized and focused.

Cost

Each student ticket will be $35 and include snacks, meals and hackathon programming.  Scholarships are available by emailing your request via [email protected].
