Funny. On a similar note, I actually have friends who go absolute nuts on FB with their political shares and comments. But are perfectly nice human beings in real life. Helpful and articulate too. Something about these echo chambers is making us all go bonkers. 🤯

Visualization gem - drop in incident solar particles on as it leaves the solar system. Still mind-blowing to think that a probe validated science with data from a dark corner of the universe that no human being alive today will ever visit. Source: HN

1/ Today I was thinking about how PhD students are expected to create good presentations but no one ever critiques their presentations (until they go on the job market, when it's too late). So here are some do's and don'ts of a good presentation (IMHO)

One thing I do wish I could do more of is teaching. No better way to learn and organize disparate thoughts! Unfortunately, no opportunity beyond occasional seminars right now. :/ Someday...

This year, I have tried to spend atleast 30 mins everyday learning something in coding or statistics that is unrelated to my immediate project needs. Learnt some exciting Python stuff that I otherwise wouldn’t have. Also, re-explaining+documenting everything I learn using jrnl.

Remember to pack your coffee/tea mug this year for ! Let's reduce the waste from the hundreds of paper cups used in the convention center every single break period.

I love Python and use it daily. But, coming from an R world, package management is an absolute nightmare even with Conda environments. Spent hours last week helping someone setup an environment from scratch. In R, I can set someone new up and running in <15 mins.

Some pieces of my work on developing an intermediate-scale forecasting system for a western US domain using the SUMMA hydrologic model and calibrating at regional scales will be highlighted in another presentation. (Not the presenting author). 🙂

A lot of startup activity in EdTech is just disregard towards voluminous existing research into median human behaviour. We are social creatures. The need to learn can't exist outside our need for fellow human connection. So, College isn't going anywhere - it will evolve.

College has never stood for consuming study material passively - like Netflix. It's for certification, collaboration, access to like-minded peers working towards a common goal, network etc. All boils down to innate human (and market) desire and need to categorize things.
