Progress happens when we don't get lulled into complacency. Racism isn't dead. (spoiler: and it's not Obama's fault) We need to do better.

Or to compare air travel today to air travel in the 1930s. Or air pollution today to 1890 London. "Better! Therefore PERFECT!"

There's no logic here. I may as well compare my novel's first draft to my elementary school writing and say, "Better! Therefore PERFECT!"

While it's vital to look back and realize we're better now than then, it's easy to lull ourselves into: THEREFORE ALL IS FINE

Maybe she was looking back too, thinking "I'd never enslave people of another race, therefore I'm not racist!"

There's a moment in HIDDEN FIGURES when Kirsten Dunst says something like "despite what you might think, I don't hate you people."

Or to cast myself as a kind of white hero. "I'd never make a Black woman walk 1/2 mile to a 'colored' bathroom, so I'm not racist!"

It's easy to think "Well, things are so much better now than they were back then. So racism is cured!"

A note to my fellow well-meaning white friends: I notice something in myself when I see/read these stories of racism from past decades.

I took my older kids to see HIDDEN FIGURES today. Great movie! Beautifully done. Highly recommended.
