Digital Publishing Interest Group
The mission of the Digital Publishing Interest Group is to provide a technical forum for experts in the digital publishing ecosystem to hold discussions and recommend solutions regarding a future vision of Digital Publishing. The main message of that vision is that the current format- and workflow-level separation between offline/portable and online document publishing should be diminished to zero. The Interest Group will provide technical direction, identify technical issues, and outline prototype solutions for relevant Working Groups of the W3C to finalize as Web standards. This group is not chartered to publish Recommendations; instead, the goal is to cooperate with the relevant W3C Working Groups to ensure that the requirements of this particular community are met.

DRAFT PUBLIC MESSAGING: Portable Web Publications
The World Wide Web Consortium’s Digital Publishing Interest Group (DPUB IG) has now published a draft document [@@fpwd] regarding a shared industry vision for advancing the capability to have portable web publications – a web-friendly publication format – for all kinds of web content. This is an important milestone for the future of the publishing industry and W3C invites public comments about this work via the DPUB mailing list @@.
Why is this a milestone? Users of all media have come to expect a seamless transition from one medium to the next, and that has born the DPUB vision [@@link to DPUB vision] for Portable Web Publications for the Open Web Platform [@@link]. The document outlines plans for publications that are part of the web - and not an afterthought. It considers the many outputs that publishers face: online, print, portable and archived formats.
How does the Portable Web Publications vision differ from EPUB? Recently, the IDPF began work on the first major revision of EPUB 3. Among the many goals of that vision is a greater alignment with the Open Web Platform, embracing the goals of this vision.
EPUB is the digital file format used by a large part of the publishing industry. The contents of an EPUB package are fundamentally part of the Open Web Platform: (X)HTML, CSS, images, and other media. Because of this, EPUB is often described as a "website in a box."
What has separated EPUB from the web was it's packaging mechanism, accessibility requirements, and navigational mechanisms. The International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) - the creators of the EPUB specification - have been one of the biggest consumers and users of W3C specs.
Historically the W3C has focused on the Web, which excluded some of the more traditional business like publishing. As those industries have begun to embrace the Web, web standards have begun to embrace those industries.
For this reason, the W3C formed the Digital Publishing Interest Group three years ago and has been working collaboratively with the IDPF and other industry consortia such as BISG. As part of this collaboration, the W3C’s DPUB group has been working toward a web-friendly publication format. The W3C and IDPF look forward to an active dialogue with the publishing industry and other content providers on this first public working draft document for Portable Web Publications.
