Sony's glass speakers are magnificent and very expensive

Last year at CES, Sony showed off its Symphonic Light speaker, a gorgeous speaker made out of glass. Reminiscent of a lantern, Sony offered few details about the product. Now that speaker is back with a new name — the Glass Sound Speaker — and will hit the market next month as a wireless Bluetooth speaker.

The Glass Sound Speaker is the latest gadget from Sony's Life Space UX project, which designs and produces high-end tech products that can seamlessly blend in with your home, and it's one of the most beautiful Bluetooth speakers we've seen in some time. Utilizing a handful of dimmable LEDs, the Glass Sound Speaker gives off a muted glow similar to a standard table lantern, albeit with a few more tricks up its sleeve.

The speaker uses the glass cylinder in combination with the driver to push out frequencies that are much closer to a human's singing voice than your average Bluetooth speaker. This makes vocals sound much better, according to The Wall Street Journal that had the chance to review the speaker, but does come at the expense of the low-end and bass output.

The battery-powered Glass Sound Speaker can be paired with a second speaker for stereo sound, but purchasing two of these things won't be cheap. At $799 each, most people will be picking these up more for the design styling than the Bluetooth capabilities — if you can even get your hands on one. The Glass Sound Speaker will be available in May at the MoMA Design Store inside New York's Museum of Modern Art.
