Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things are examples of phrases used to describe the integration of a modern information backbone into the functioning of physical systems and infrastructures. What has received much less attention is the integration of techniques for the analysis of massive amounts of data (“Big Data”) in near real time to better operate CPS. A leading adopter of such technologies is the energy sector: the smart grid, oil and gas, and other industrial infrastructures associated with the modern energy ecosystem.
An estimated $2 trillion is being invested this decade in upgrading the power infrastructure globally to make devices in the power grid remotely machine addressable. In addition to smart electric and gas meters, many of the devices that constitute the grid are adding sensors including transformers, substations, and other power generation and control componentry.
Collectively, smart connected devices across today’s energy system generate massive amounts of information. Highly sophisticated statistical algorithms are necessary to integrate the data, create data-driven statistical models with predictive power, and extract the value and economic benefit from this otherwise incomprehensible stream of information.
The application of energy analytics is not limited to natural gas and electric utilities. Large amounts of data are being collected on oil and gas production, transportation, refining and consumption.
Data analytics and machine learning are critical to smart grid optimization and the modern distributed energy system. By holistically correlating and analyzing all data associated with the dynamics and interactions of the end-to-end power infrastructure – including real-time and predicted demand, consumption, technical and non-technical loss, weather, and generation capacity across the entire power value chain – dramatic advances in safety, reliability, affordability and energy efficiency can be realized. Other economic and social benefits include:
- Reducing energy use and associated carbon emissions
- Reducing the fuel necessary to power the grid
- Dynamically reconfiguring the power network around points of failure
- Reducing technical and non-technical energy loss, including energy theft
- Preventing power interruptions
- Prioritizing demand response
- Predicting, preventing and recovering rapidly from power interruptions
- Accurately predicting load and distributed generation capacity
- Preventing and prioritizing cybersecurity breaches
- Reducing adverse environmental impacts
A recent McKinsey & Company study has shown that the economic and social benefit of smart grid analytics can exceed $300 per meter, per year. In the oil and gas sector, a unified algorithmic framework for decision making at both the supply and demand level will produce improvements in safety and new paradigms of operational efficiency.

Fostering High-Impact Collaborations

Seed Funding of Development of Large Proposals
Twice a year the Institute invites researchers to submit brief proposals for seed grants to develop larger submissions to government entities and foundations. One-time grants of $50,000 are available.
Matching Grants for Successfully Funded Projects
For successfully funded and eligible projects, the Institute awards matching grants up to 20% of the contract or award amount per year, capped at $75,000 per year.
Industrial Advisory Board
The Industrial Advisory Board is an exclusive industry partner program that fosters active collaboration between the private sector and the Institute members and researchers. Members, including senior officials from energy companies and utilities, and other stakeholder organizations, act as advisors, reviewers, and mentors, offering timely input on energy-sector-related industrial and societal needs and trends.
Siebel Energy Institute Research Conferences
The Institute holds an annual conference to disseminate the results of the projects associated with the Institute. Academic researchers, Siebel Energy Institute Industrial Advisory Board, utility companies, energy companies, and other stakeholders are invited to attend.
Selected Topical Research Workshops
The Institute will hold special in-depth, two-day workshops on new and emerging areas and methods for energy analytics as necessary.
Siebel Scholars
The Institute coordinates with the Siebel Scholars Foundation each year to select eight students from among the consortium universities to receive $35,000 as a merit-based award to defray the costs of their education.
Research Publicly Available
To maximize the impact of research and its long-term benefits to society, research outcomes will be publicly available. Funding recipients and project participants are strongly encouraged to grant Non-Exclusive Royalty Free (NERF) licenses in the specific projects in which the inventions are made and in all intellectual property created.
