Sheriff Arpaio on the media: Why bite the hand that feeds?
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio may love Donald Trump. But he doesn't agree with Trump blocking reporters.
“Why would I bite the hand that feeds?” Arpaio told our colleague Glenn Thrush in this week's "Off Message" podcast.
Arpaio explained the media helped him with free publicity.
"Well, you know, look at me. I did some controversial things," he said. "I don’t have the money to put out brochures every day. Now, I can only visit so many people. Now, I don’t visit everybody in the United States. I can’t. I do make some trips here and there, but I’m well- known.
Now, how do they know me? I don’t go every day. I’m not in New York. Because they know me through the media," Arpaio said.
Despite understanding his need for free media, Arpaio hasn't necessarily been on the best of terms with the press. In 2013, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a $3.75 million settlement for the Phoenix New Times' newspaper co-founders, whose false arrests in 2007 were allegedly orchestrated by Arpaio.
