In the new parliament, if Labor and the Greens oppose government legislation the Government will need to convince at least nine of the crossbench to support their agenda - a disparate group including four One Nation senators, four independents and three Nick Xenophon Team senators. In response to Scott Morrison's public lecture on protecting the country's Triple A rating, Nick Xenophon says he's well aware of his responsibilities and his team will work constructively and consultatively with government.

Russia has been barred from next month's Rio Paralympics, with organisers blasting what they've termed a 'medals over morals mentality' sports system overseen by the Russian government. The International Paralympic Committee says Russia will be banned from the entire event, imposing the type of blanket ban that Olympics bosses had avoided. Meanwhile, Australian athletes are delivering a strong early performance at Rio. More

There are many local residents in Rio who have had little to celebrate about the Olympics. The favela Vila Autodromo was all but destroyed to make room for a car park for the main Olympic precinct. Out of more than 700 families, only twenty are left. But those remaining are defiant about their future and have a found novel way to commemorate their survival. More

Indian police say they're keeping the five-million dollar idol as evidence against the man charged with its theft. A bitter feud is intensifying in Queensland between the government and farmers over tree-clearing rates. The State Government has released the results of its 2014-15 Statewide Land Cover and Tree Study, which shows that almost 300,000 hectares of vegetation was removed in the 12 months covered by the report. The Deputy Premier says the rate of tree clearing in the state is unsustainable, and threatens the health of the Great Barrier Reef.
