I just got home from watching the Thorns lose 3-0 in the NWSL Championships... And now this? There's a party in Portland; tears while we're drinking tonight.

This is brilliant. From the shot selection to the music, pacing, colors, and of course, Futura – it's 100% on brand.

This picture just screams Israel, idk why

Because it is!

Blanco, hands down! Beyond two assists he funneled the ball forward damn near every touch. A joy to watch.

And I want to give a shout out to Polo! He's been improving consistently and is settling in well on the first team. He had some amazing passes today and the Villafaña/Polo connection is looking fantastic.

I was able to pick up a copy of the DVD from a local rental store and I loved this film. It's a brilliantly written farce about a live radio-play gone wrong when the lead actress suddenly decides her main character should be an American lawyer named Mary Jane. The seal is broken on re-writes and our meekish playwright stands-by as her beloved play descends into madness. Still, there are moments of genuine emotion from endearing to sad to straight-up funny.

This gem of a film deserves more credit. There aren't many award-worthy screenplay type comedies out there! Also, Ken Watanabe reprises his role as the truck driver in Tampopo, a super darling homage to the work of director Juzo Itami.

The film begins: "Why are they carrying so much baggage?! It's a tiny train!"

As they're running to catch the final train: "Finally they're getting rid of all that baggage!"

Realizing the metaphor: "Oh. Well damn."

We talk a lot about how beautiful Wes Anderson's films are, but I can't help but feel I've missed out on many visual metaphors while distracted by the beauty. Are there any clear visual metaphors from the other films you can think of? Time to get re-watching the oeuvre again, it seems!

Of course Germany's is Fight Club!

How does Fight Club have anything to do with Germany? It's funded fully by America production companies, features American actors, is written by an American, directed by an American, and shot in and around Los Angeles. The AFI lists Germany as the "Country" of the film, but I am lost as to how. Germany has a rich cinematic history and to have so clearly a product of Hollywood as their "best-rated movie" is pretty lame.

Not sure if Hollywood makes it "lame" but I'm also not sure how Germany has anything to do with it even Wikipedia list Germany and the U.S. as the countries but I can't find anything on the page about Germany.

No, no! Fight club isn't lame! I love Fight Club. Rather, this list including Fight Club as the highest rated "German film" is lame. Apologies for not being clear.

An alternative, less archaic measure of development. "Third world" as you quote it in Wikipedia refers to Cold War era non-Capitalist and non-Communist states. This is the historic meaning of the term, which in the semiotics of today has come to mean "poor" or "less developed." For this distinction, we have better language and indicators to refer to.

Historically, the Three Arrows were flown by the Iron Front, a product of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). The Three Arrows were a different symbol from a different group than the Antifaschistische Aktion (what I think when I hear "Antifa Flag"), composed of members of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). It's worth nothing that postwar, the SPD and KPD merged and may have had a bit of overlap prior to the war as well. The Iron Front was, however, distinctly anti-communist and the logo of the Three Arrows was designed specifically to be drawn over Monarchal, Nazi, and Soviet ideology/imagery alike, check it: https://i.imgur.com/a5f0Y65.jpg

Anyway. I'm splitting hairs here.

And for transparency sake: I am all for flying the Three Arrows at Timbers games and the flag even made it on television vs. Philly on the same day Patriot Prayer/Proud Boys were rallying 10 blocks from the stadium earlier in the day which had me so hype!

p.s. The Anti-Fascist movement seems to have started specifically in Italy, opposing Mousellini where perhaps the earliest Anti-Fascist flag from the Arditi del Popolo is perfect for the Timbers Army: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_Arditi_del_Popolo_Battalion.svg

So, uhh... let's fly this flag too?

For some reason the image isn't loading, but I saw it before and totally agree. What is there, one film directed by a woman on this list?

Yup, just Lost in Translation, I believe. I'd like to see a top 100 directed by females list.

An impossible vibe to recreate, but I'd love to see the game with a group of emotional fans. Thanks!

The mood these days would be, in my perspective, a middle ground between irony and honesty. Something akin to metamodernism and The Absurd. I've noticed that films these days want to be "meta", postmodern, and occasionally edgy while having some element of naivety, simplicity, and straightforward storytelling. The Marvel Cinematic universe epitomizes this. I would also add nostalgia and reimagining past fantasy worlds and making they more gritty and/or grounded.e.g. Planet of The Apes reboot. More ethnic diversity is certainly part of the "mood" these days as well.

I'm having a hard time understanding how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exemplary of postmodern edginess. I do see the simplicity and straightforward storytelling, but not the "meta." At all, really..

Which ones didn't look like a balk? To me those were actually on the more clear side.

The first one, imo. Looked back and forth, yes -- but no forward motion, no step off the mound.

I always feel like a have an eye for baseball but balls make me feel like a stupidass so I don't know. Oh well.

Photoshop a series of images with each step of the reveal. Compile them in Premier pro. Add audio.

Ok, the most American filmmakers are:

  • Les Blank
  • Spike Lee
  • John Ford
  • Melvin Van Peebles
  • Frederick Wiseman
  • Ava DuVernay

Honestly, America is so vast and huge and multicultural that it's impossible to sum it up in any one turn. There's different kinds of Americas contained within and the vision of America by someone like John Hughes is radically different from the America of Ossie Davis or Penelope Spheeris or Robert M. Young. Tobe Hooper and Rob Zombie are quintessentially American. So is Dee Rees.

What are you looking for? You want the ugliness, naivety, and grandiose elements of America? D.W. Griffith. You want bombastic beer and sex America? Michael Bay. The loneliness and isolation of rural America? Kelly Reichardt.

One way to approach it is to break it down by region. Find movies shot in your city, or state, that embody the part of the country you want.

Les Blank!! He captured and preserved many an American tradition from the 1970s until the 90s. For a full picture of how genuinely diverse America is watch Les Blank! His films feel like a time capsule, like he's preserving his subjects for all posterity. Sincere. Beautiful. I love Les Blank. Favorites: Garlic is as Good as Ten Mothers, Blue Accordin to Lightnin Hopkins, and Always for Pleasure.

Another good "American" film, re: struggling to survive in suburban life, is Poto and Cabengo, for which Les was a cinematographer.

Uhm... What?

I'm new here. It's been about 30 minutes since the last one. What app is this? I like the design. Let's go.

Congrats, and welcome! The app is called ‘Smoke Free’. It’s freemium and does a great job of calculating money saved, health benefits, and all the rest.

Good luck on your journey. Remember, the first three days are the worst. You’ll be great.

My local library has anthologies titled things like 30+ Comedic Monologues for Young Female Actors, I'd search something similar at yours. Good luck and read a bunch!

Dallas's don't look anything like that anymore

Recently travelled to Dallas to visit family and was able to catch an FC Dallas game. Did Frisco just pop up over night? The stadium is surrounded by new condos and new construction and looks like in the middle of nowhere from these photos!
